My wife has just put 10 quids worth of petrol in our 6 month old Freelander. She drove it the 1/4 of a mile home and it now refuses to start (unsurprisingly!).

Having spoken to the dealer (who LR assistance are taking it to tomorrow) they say that as the vehicle has been driven they most likely will need to replace the injectors, fuel pump etc at a cost of around £2k.

Has anyone else got any experience of doing this? Is all this work really necessary? Is it worth trying anything else first?

Your obviously claiming on your insurance by contact your dealer, you might have been better contacting the AA miss-fuel department as your dealer will have chalked it up in the engine warranty void database Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I hope the repair isn't too expensive but fear that repairing it to LR service spec will be more than £2000

Should a 6 month old model not have the mis fuelling device fitted or is this a recent addition?

would be a very good investment especially if you have two or more cars that are a
mixture of fuels. I can assure all those who think they will never do it that it is very
easily done. Fortunately I realised what I was doing whilst fuelling a 330d BMW a few
years back, only got about 10 litres into it and then had it recovered home and got the
tank drained etc. Could have been a very expensive mistake, BMW reckoned £4000.

For £29 the Fuelsure cap is a bargain.

Our D3 got about 10 litres of unleaded of petrol in one day, and on the advice of LR we just filled up with Diesel, similar proportions to what Brian was saying. Worked fine  Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

I work for a transport company and odd times it has happened, fill it to the brim with diesel, it should be fine.
A warning to others though, the other way round ie diesel in a petrol don't even try to start it get it towed away and drained. FL2 HSE Sumatra black with body kit

can misfuelling be claimed on your insurance?

Luckily my insurance company (LV) does cover acts of stupidity, so I'll get it sorted out properly.

Seems like a heck of price to pay though for a simple mistake.

My wife will be getting a Fuelsure for her birthday.

I have had many missfuelled vehicles to deal with. Laterly we started having modern common rail vehicles as well, most of which had been driven. Mondeos and Transits with 2.0 and 2.2 TDCI engines.
I just treated them the same as always, drain tank, change fuel filter bleed 2-3 litres through system without starting engine and then start. never had a failure. Some were local customers and cars still running perfectly 2 years on.
I carried out this on a Audi on a Sunday, gave the customer a bill for just over £100, he produced a receipt from Audi (when his wife missfuelled) and it was for over £800, there were no seals fitted. They removed tank replaced fuel pipes and filter etc, also charged hire of fuel containers plus specialist disposal. All FL2's (3) Gone

Just renewed my insurance with Swiftcover (getting a bit pricey at £560 but I do live in inner London and have a guaranteed no-claims). Notice that they will cover mis-fuelling for an extra £4.99.

Many moons ago, I "borrowed" a work vehicle for a personal task that was only going to take half an hour or so. It was low on fuel so I topped up the tank - unfortunately, with petrol in a diesel motor. When it spuluttered to a stop, I realised my mistake and made a call to the fleet manager "in confidence". When the tow truck brought me back to work for what I thought would be a "subtle" garaging, about 40 blokes walked out of the warehouse yelling, clapping, flashing brown eyes and basically making me feel like I should crawl under a rock. The net result was OK - drain tanks and flush a couple of times, everything OK. I'd only travelled half a mile or so. At the time I was a Sales Manager for an area the size of Germany and had a lot of staff driving diesels - they never let me forget it!
The moral of the story - don't feel so bad, others have felt worse!
