my07 fl2 swap for my07d3

Hi I have been offered a swap plus cash my way to swap my 2007 freelander 2 for a discovery 3 tdv6 commercial. My back seats are never used as the wife has a large company car and we more often than not use hers for the free fuel on family trips. I would have no problem with the commercial as I work in a testing ctr here in Dublin and the tax drops from 848 to 231 per year insuance is the same. So my question is this... Should I leave well enough alone? will my running costs ie fuel jump through the roof?

My car is valued at 17500 euro and the discovery is 13000 my mate has had the dicovery since new and it is fully serviced he wants the freelander for his wife as he is going for a lwb pajero Rolling with laughter

Any advice or opinion would be great cheers.

Not trying to be awkward, but I think you have to make your mind up rather than on here by proxy.

not asking for you to choose a vehicle for me I'm simply asking if you know of any massive differences in running a d3 I already know I like the vehicle that the simple choice.

Who would ever use a forum like this to ask what vehicle I should drive???

just trying to get some advice from somebody whom may have done the same thing i.e. go from a fl2 to a d3 or visa versa

Thanks

I would also look at the fact that you could also be stuck with a D3 Commercial, the Irish government are taxing high rate cars, so, how many people are going to want a D3comm when a transit would be more suitable and possible cheaper on tax

Ask you self is why your mates looking at offloading to you??? As he can't sell it etc Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

The high rate of tax only applies to new cars and not commercials.

He has not tried to sell it yet and it is his wife that wants the fl2 as she now drives an astra.

Thanks for the replies though

You don't mention the mileage you're doing. IF low mileage I'd say go for it - but if higher the extra running costs of the Disco might make it unattractive. Brian

I would love a Disco 4 but I came from a Disco 2 to an FL2 instead because I couldn't justify to myself the need for the extra space/running costs, etc ( some may say sod it if you like it go for it !! )

I wouldn't need to justify this to anyone else but myself, so that is where the personal choice/decision comes into it.

sorry my comments are not much help to you, hope you get some other more enlightening posts.

All I am saying is you probably have an idea what you should do, so go with the gut reaction.

I've got both. They are different beasts. For me, the FL2 lacks space and presence on the road. It also lacks air suspension, rock crawl on the terrain control, not that I've ever used it, higher driving position etc. However, the FL2 it is a bit quicker, bit more manouvreable and cheaper excise licence, more mpg. If I had to choose, I'd take the Disco for me in my circumstances.

No doubt someone on here will be aghast at what I've said, but thats entirely it, different people, different needs make different choices.

Speaking personally, having moved up from an FL2 to D3 and now D4, depending on how you drive, the fuel/mileage between the FL2 & D3 is not a big as you might think. Driving the D3 conservatively, I can match the MPG that I used to get from my FL2, the D4 hopefully should be slightly better. If you have a heavy right foot like I do then you will notice a drop in MPG. Like I said, its how you drive.

As no 2 FL2's are the same, it's hard to compare the 2 unless you have one of each vehicle side by side, so whilst some people might think it will be more expensive, my first hand experience of both vehicles side by side proves otherwise.

Hope that helps Thumbs Up ______________________

thanks a million for all the replies. I'm going to take the d3 for a week and get a feel for it, power, fuel comfort and the likes.

Cheers
