OK just had a price to change to a BMW 520 at £22995.Looking at Autotrader, similar cars to mine are advertised for between £19990 and £20850 with standard wheels(mine has HSE wheels).Offered £17000 in part exchange, and my car is mint and does not need anything apart from a valet. It even has a 12 month Land Rover extended warranty.I doubt the dealer paid more than £20000 for the BM so there is £6000 in the deal.He can retail my car for even more profit.Told the dealer I can sell mine to( we buy any car. com ) and pay cash but he would not discount the BMW.This is a BIG dealer with Land Rover,Mercedes,Jaguar and BMW franchises.I have noticed over the past few years when thinking of changing cars that the £5000 barrier seems to come up and dealers will not part exchange for less than this.Obviously the £5000 is when the cars are around the £20-25k mark. All I can think is that the dealers are doing really well, and can afford to turn down business. Stornaway grey SE auto with 18" alloys

Yup I agree, my previous one was on their forecourt with over £4000 mark up within 2 weeks with nothing needed other than a valet, paperwork and a few hundred for someones time/wages.

I know some dealers are crooks in suits, but as one dealer told me out of the mark up they will have to discount that price or give extras, in addition having paid for the car it may sit on the forcourt for six months, would you want to pay £20,000 for somthing that will sit there and loose money. As he said there is no such yhing as a free lunch, from the coffee to the courtesy cars it all has to come out of the profit.

Agreed, only one dealer has ever explained their costing to me, each sale/exchange has in its part to pay towards the salaries, building upkeep, ground rates, services, depreciation if it does not sell etc. Fair enough but on a part exchange they want to make as much profit as possible on what comes in and on what goes out and this can amount to many thousands.
I have had good experiences with my car purchases, ie the treatment received from start to finish but I do not allow this to cloud over the 'their profit' and 'my loss' I feel, If I want a new car I have to accept their terms within reason, otherwise I have to go without, but it's still one hell of a profit for them when the deals made.

Basically, purchasing a car is a loss making excercise no matter where you purchase it, it's just that some dealers make it a more happier occasion than others.

Your right! All you have to do is look at the land most garages sit on, it's worth a bomb, the fancy buildings, the staff milling about aparently doing nothing, the plush settee, the TV, free tea, coffee, the free cars the staff swan about in, it is being parolled by us, the customer!

We can't or don't want to afford you anymore. A bit like the Bankers!

i love it when folk think that a dealer should pay book and not make a profit Laughing

i agree they should stop it, after all we don't like other making a profit do we

hang on a minute if they didn't make a profit, pay the VAT on it and whatever else they need to pay out, there wouldn't be a garage to buy a car from as they'll be all bust

A garage is a business, a business that needs to make a profit, you know they will, stop been so tight about it, shop around and get somewhere more comfortable, but don't expect it for free, its not the NHS Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
