Newbie needs help with V hot Dash and Key!

Had Freelander 2 for 3 months.
Can't understand why the centre console behind the radio and under the dash gets so so very hot on a trip.
The heat travels up to the key and this area of the dash is also what i think is too hot.

When the heater is switched off then no heat in console/dash.
When i change the direction flow of rhe heater then very hot again!

Had it in the garage I use for my car and they can't find anything wrong.
Have asked LR Technicians at local dealer but they don't seem to have heard of this!

Has anyone heard of this and got fix for me? Please Very Happy

Hey I love the car just want this bit to be cooler!

No problems, does it get hot on Cold settings?

Could be a dislodged heating pipe, but more worrying could be a shorted wire or radio

It could also be to do with the PTC(?) ceramic heater in the dash shorting out, which was part of a nationwide recall, has yours been done? Worth a check with LR Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

As a newbie to FL2's, could you explain what the PTC is and would I have one in my 57 plate TD4 S?

Tend to think it's a dislodged heater pipe. That said, it does get very hot in that area anyway, it's just a lot of us dont tend to stick our hands on the dash whilst driving and then it cools down quickly.

Had the pipes checked and everything looks ok down there.
Didn't really keep putting my hand down there till I noticed the key was red hot when took it out after a journey of 25-30 miles.
I assume it is to do with the heating system as when I leave the whole system in the off position it all stays cold.
When it is on but set to cold then it all still gets V hot. When setting in the various directions (screen, face or legs) then the area still gets V hot.

Don't think it is the wiring or radio as it stays cold when heating is off.

Not heard of the PTC - but will check it has been recalled for that.

The radio would actually turn off and a message would appear on the display saying 'overheating'

The only other thing it can be is a dislodged heating duct. I know if you pull the dash apart and don't quite get everything alligned, it can happen. From the area you say is effected, it's very close to the right hand vent. I'd suspect that one not to be properly fixed. It's an easy DIY job that takes very little time.

after been out in my car, radio on, heating on warm, 30 mins drive later = cold dash, 15mins later of engine running stood still = cold dash

not even a hint of it been hot Confused

I think it has to be a heating pipe, but you say if hot when running cold, (cold on both dials?) Confused

so I think you need to pull radio/fan fuse and

run with radio off, fan off, >check temp
run with radio off, fan hot, >check temp
run with radio off, fan cold, >check temp

and visa versa

it could be a overheating, shorting out radio, fan motor or something, but when things get very hot, they tend to set fire if its a electrical fault of some sort, Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Hey thanks for doing that.
Been in touch with LR dealer and they done some digging for me.
It seems the PTC fuse was removed in December 08 and the Motor replaced in early 09.
They never heard of this problem!
But am thinking that it may be a faulty Pre Heater motor again!!

Going to take the fuse out for the PTC and see if it still get hot.

Will keep you posted Smile

OK - I found the 100A fuse!!
I assume you have to unbolt it by taking the 2 x nuts off?
Surprised
