It's my understanding Bill that there is no one 'thing' that will give that indication, there are a multitude of sensors that can force the "Reduced Engine Performance" message, from the fuel line through to the exhaust system. It's aim is to protect the engine from damage as it rightly or wrongly sees a possible problem.
Your only hope is that an 'error code' is logged and points to the culprit that threw the message up.
