Two weeks ago some thieving so-and-so decided to relieve my Freelander 1 (TD4 HSE) of it's catalytic converter - right outside our house! Apparently 3 others 3 others were taken over the same weekend.

Well, an extremely long story cut short, I replaced the cat with another one but surrounded it with a complete Freelander 2 package, SE to be precise. Thought about a change last year but couldn't afford it.

Went for my first long drive today - WOW what a difference! An amazing car.

I really cannot believe the difference between the two vehicles.

Indeed it happens often, I sometimes feel the media is to blame, the knuckle dragging scum would take years round these parts to catch up but the news lets them know what to nick next!

A PIR detector and flame thrower is the answer, I would rather come out to a flame grilled pikey than a stolen cat!

Ha ha! I had load of ideas but the Police said they all compromised currnet legislature!

I went to get some form of protection for the next FL (was not allowed to bring it home without something to protect it). Found a device called a CatClamp so I bought one of those and the dealer said they would fit it for free.

It turns out that there is no way on earth it would fit - not without some form of future damage. They took me underneath the vehicle and I have to say Land Rover have done a good job of protectign the cat. You couldn't remove easily (as in criminal activity) or quickly - not without removing the underplate thingy! Even then I guess it's a bit of a struggle without twizzle arms

Incidentally, scrap metal theft is the "Crime of the Century". Nothing is safe. Police have told me no end of woeful tales..... drain covers, all copper from building sites, railway signalling cables. These pikies ain't so daft either - platinum is currently commanding a higher price than gold.

Platinum alway did, didn't it?

I am considering a Smartwater kit when my Freely arrives, does anyone have any thoughts on this.
It is claimed to be a decent detterent and the cat can be done too?

The 'Smartwater kit' in itself won't stop the theft as 'cash in hand' scrap is not logged so is unlikely to deter them. By displaying the SmartWater warning labels though, you will let criminals know that your property is protected and hopefully they will pass you by, so the strongest deterrent will be the sticky labels on show.

....... and that's the downside, I hate labels in windows even the dealers stuck on my rear window heating element.

Sounds like it is well protected on the FL2 and other vehicles are being targeted first as easier pickings.

Glad they only "tried" to get in, it sounds like they were thwarted, or did they notice the labels and abandon their attempt? after all the level of intelligence is likely to include those, for whom, thinking is an effort.
