Just picked up our new SD4 SE to find that they had a promotion and we received a free Garmin 1490T, professionally installed as part of the LR anniversary promotion! My question is this however, as it's permanently installed in place of the factory Sat-Nav unit, how to you access the mini-usb or micro-SD card slot for updating the maps? I've emailed the dealer but am still awaiting (I have a suspicion they should have plugged the USB in and left it hanging in the glove box, but the cord is still in the Nuvi box and I see no USB connection...

Sounds like a nice bonus. I think I have seen pics of that or similar self installed but what does the factory install look like? Care to upload some photos to your gallery?

Morning Whitey,The sound output for the Garmin 1490T is via the units own speaker; there is no audio output facility on this model Garmin. However, when installed in the dashboard hole there is no problem with volume or clarity using the units own speaker. In fact, the volume generally runs at about 75%, much higher and I found it became too loud. It would be interesting to see the dealer installation; I'm assuming that there is a mask or frame around the Garmin unit which, if available separately, would be handy. For interest, before purchasing and installing the Garmin I wondered whether the Land Rover dealership could do the same installation in my car as they were doing on the latest models. Turned out that the dealership is not involved with the installation, but they put me in touch with the company that does install them. Short answer was 'Yes, happy to provide and install the unit, complete job $2300'. On that basis I decided to do it myself but, as I say, the surround mask could be the finishing touch.

Thanks for posting them. It looks very neat. Quite a bit more built in than the self installs I think (no offense to the others that have done it). I wonder if we can get the surround from LR or Garmin. Also, I think I can see a micro-USB socket to the left of the screen. That is probably how you will update the maps etc. One last question, when it loads as the car starts, does it show a Land Rover logo??? Take it easy, Whytey |

Morning again Whytey, I think the hole you can see to the left of the screen is actually the cut out for the built in microphone on the Garmin. It may be that you have to remove the unit to get access to the USB socket - it could be worthwhile cdn-downunder asking the dealer how that is done. As a point, Garmin were offering on units purchased between November and the end of January free map updatings for life; perhaps this offer would apply to yours since the timing is about right. It is a fairly simple operation to load a Land Rover logo to show on the screen during loading if it hasn't already been done - if you like I can email you Land Rover logo.

Well, that's a bit of a question! Personally, I'd need to look at the installed surround, how it's fitted and how easy it is to access the mini USB port. If i did get the surround I would spray it matt black to match the rest of the console; it would also save spraying the unit surround itself. Beyond that, I am quite pleased with the way the self install merges in, particularly with a saving of getting up to $2000 - but then I would say that wouldn't I?!

The cut out on the left side is for the microphone as you say. The 1490T has (redundant for my vehicle) an integrated bluetooth hands free and the cut outs on the right are for the speakers (volume is more than acceptable, provided you don't have the stereo up too loud as it is not integrated). I have emailed the dealer enquiring about access to the USB port as you need to log into the unit to even register (and I'll follow up the free maps offer with them too, thanks for that!). Will also load the Land Rover logo for the start up screen (assuming I can figure out how to do it, have to download the manual online) and would appreciate you emailing them if you have them, again many thanks. I have noticed on our road trip that the colour of the surround looks almost brown in sunlight, although not a big issue to me. It does look professionally produced so perhaps Scosche or somebody has a kit out? I'll try to find out who the dealer uses for the installations and see if I can find out anything more on it. The fit, finish and power integration is certainly first rate, bar my USB issue. I'm going to add the ACM for iPod integration, so the dash will come off for that and I'll have a USB lead permanently installed in glove box as a worst case. Incidentally we took the vehicle up to Buddong Falls in Kosciuszku National park yesterday, the vehicle and terrain response performed flawlessly over some pretty reasonable 4x4 tracks (fording, handling some deep ruts and torn up track due to recent storms). 11MY SE SD4 in Lago Grey just arrived with a free Garmin thrown in! How come the BT is redundant? I thought with the FL2, you can only get the BT with the SatNav kit, which you had to go third party for. So what BT kit do you have? |

No the 11MY comes with Bluetooth as standard on (I believe) on all models, and other than a couple of little niggles that I'm yet to get used to (have only had the vehicle for 3 days mind you, but why do you need to press the TEL button on the stereo to activate the phone for making a call, instead of the system picking up you have hit the 'call' button on the steering wheel?). Generally though, it works very well, integrated with the stereo (I have the premium 7.1 system but I think it's universal) and paired with both my wife's and my iPhones (a 3GS and a 4 - including downloaded phonebooks etc) with no dramas at all. The SatNav was a bonus in our case (apparently included on all 10MY run outs and 11MY - perhaps only ones ordered in 2010?) and is a Garmin aftermarket model rather than the LR part but is a great install and works quite well. 11MY SE SD4 in Lago Grey just arrived with a free Garmin thrown in! Might take the dash apart when we get back to Sydney and have a look at what exactly is there and come back to you on that CG. If it's as simple a fabrication / installation as I think (I used to do car stereo installs in a previous life) this may be a pretty simple fabrication that I (or you) can have done up once we produce a parts list. Will let you know next week when I get home. 11MY SE SD4 in Lago Grey just arrived with a free Garmin thrown in! I was at the dealers yesterday and managed to look at a Freelander 2 that had the aftermarket Garmin all fitted in. It looked very smart indeed. The plastic surround/mount was shiny black plastic, which seemed a little out of place being surrounded by the duller dash plastic but on the whole it did look like it was factory fitted as opposed to a retro-fit.
