Manual or Auto - has Auto Express concluded the argument

This week's Auto Express magazine reviews the FL2 as a used car buy. One of the four "buyer beware" messages identifies the fact that clutches and gearboxes can be weak - it continues by suggesting potential buyers listen for rumbling on the move and clutch slip under acceleration and jumping out of gear.

A further buyer beware suggests towing can cause premature brake and clutch wear. Crying or Very sad

So while we can imagine CG chuckling to himself - the message I feel is simple - go Auto for towing and in my opinion, go Auto for a smoother vehicle and less costly option in the longer term. Very Happy

read that in Auto express, yes I did chuckle somewhat, was going to try and post a link on here.

that said it goes for all vehicles auto or not, towing (anything) is over and above normal use of the car and WILL cause extra wear and tear. At work

Please let this be wrong is there any manual Fl2s on here with decent mlilage on that havent had any clutch issues,just ready to take the plunge on a manual... Confused

Did 37000 miles in my first Freelander 2 with no clutch issues.

It depends on the owner and how they have treated the vehicle. Buy Land Rover approved used for peace of mind or get an AA inspection. What edge the auto has in not faffing about with a clutch it loses in being less smooth and more expensive to run. Indeed, npinks mentioned recently that his auto does approx 100 miles less on a full tank than the manual he used to own. Dress it up how you want, thats quite a difference.

Did over 60,000 miles in my first FL2 at least 6,000 of that towing and no clutch issues for me Thumbs Up

42,000 no issues so far. Don't put petrol in a diesel. They don't run well.

Unless you really need auto, dont throw your money away. Manual is smoother and more controlled but obviously more involving (which i prefer). Unless you need the towing advantages of auto there is no point spending extra money on something that will then cost more to run.

35,000 miles including towing. No problems with clutch. Smooth gear change on mine. Always been used to a manual gearbox and quite happy with it. Its what you get used to probably. 2007 TD4 SE Manual

64k and no clutch probs with a manual 2007 TD4 S Zermat Silver, maual, panoramic sunroof, rear headrest entertainment system, towbar for trailer.
