Can you remap a SD4?

As subject really, just curious right now, but can one remap a SD4 for increased power?

And, what is the actual difference between a TD4 and SD4? Is a SD4 just a remapped TD4? Or are there mechanical differences such as different spec turbos etc?

This is an interesting question....
For sure that some components are different, BUT
I've saw something that makes me think... On dealers IDS diagnostic system, when you log onto any TD4 car, when interogating the engine ECU, it says 2.2 TD4 engine, 160PS (Low Power)
We can ask any dealers that are forum members to confirm it. For example James from Lookers.
Makes you wonder, isn't it?
In my opinion it was a marketing decision. For sure the engine can handle the 190 HP, but in the first years they sold a version that was limited at 160 HP and later they unleashed the full 190 HP potential to gain, again, customers.

It's not uncommon alex. Either way, I'm sure in the near future companies will be able to remap them. Wait for a reputable one to though.

Also, don't expect the same power gains that a TD4 would provide, it's still the same basic engine. Although (I think) there's a new turbo for the SD4 (that's what the marketing blurb for it said last august!)

A 2.2 engine with a DPF producing as near as makes no difference 200hp though...I'd leave mine if it was me! Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

The TD4 has the Honeywell Garrett GTB1752VK turbine. In other words a VNT 17 turbo.

Has anyone any idea which turbo is on SD4?

Maybe someone with a SD4 could read on the turbine the identification number?

Is it easy to see the turbo details on the SD4? Happy to confirm spec if it's accessible? Where is it? I know what a turbo looks like but Freelanders are new to me...

The turbo it's between the engine and the firewall.
As you look to the engine from the front of the car, it's behind it.
I know it's easier to look at the turbo from below the car, with the car on an elevator.
I will look tomorrow and tell you the easiest way to look at the turbo's body.

Redlabel: You can see the "provisional" Norwegian models and engine/transmision combinations here
http://www.landrover.com/no/no/lr/freelander/explore/s/ - and also SE and HSE

Unfortunatly its taking the new Norwegian LR import company (which is Danish) a hell of a long time to complete the website and many pages have been under construction for months. My local dealer has told me that this Danish company is very difficult to deal with and will probably NOT be selling Land Rover from next year Neutral 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Autobox internals are the same as it can handle by default up to 450 Nm.
Maybe the software is a little changed because, as they've said, it should accomodate that new feature of putting it automatically to "N" when standing still in "D", in order to reduce consumption and pollution...
Can anybody with a SD4 confirm this? Did you "feel it"? Laughing

The SD4 is fitted with a stonger Turbo so it pass's durability at 190PS. Although the TD4 is perfectly happy at 190PS, it would not withstand durability at this level.

Durability testing involves the engine being run at 80% throttle with 75% load for 200 hours constantly. This of course does not happen to every engine, it is how the manufacturer does the development of the engine, and once the engine pass's durability, this engine/turbo specification is passed on for production.

On the open road, we cannot give an engine this type of punishment as we will come across, bends, traffic lights and so on. This is why the TD4 is happy to run 190PS in the real world.

The SD4 turbo will fit the normal TD4.

Regarding re-mapping the SD4, the fundamental engine is the same as the TD4, so taking into account the different turbo, Superchips reckon you may get it up to 200bhp to 205bhp, but they are still working on it. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. A piece of advice. Don't, 190bhp should be enough, if it isn't buy a bigger car!! Hi Darling, I'll be home in 10 mins. If I'm not back, please read this message again...

United Kingdom

My thoughts entirely.

It is very attractive to think that we could get a bit of extra uumph with just a software change and perhaps a TD4 might benefit from such a remap. But the SD4 is already pretty near the top of its sensible operating power. If you want the car to last then perhaps remapping an SD4 is not such a good idea.

Just a thought...
