I had my glow plugs changed today Thumbs Up - all four were faulty! No wonder I was having trouble when the temperature dropped below -5c

All I need now is a cold winter to test the new glow plugs. Laughing

£225 to fit including parts if anyone interested, which I did not think was bad. I'm just popping out, I may be gone for a while.

Hi All,

Just a heads up for anyone in a cold climate that is thinking of purchasing an LR2. The bottom line is that they simply WILL NOT EVEN CRANK OVER at anything below -20C. Mine is hard starting at even anything approaching -10C.

I would be extremely cautious when dealing with sales reps because they give you a cock and bull story about Land Rover's being so tough and rugged and that they do not require block heaters. BS! I know the RR Sports are better in the cold but the LR2 is simply crap in the cold. I cannot imagine why this is because it is a Volvo engine and I know that it gets cold in Sweden from time to time Rolling Eyes

I cannot tell you how embarassing it is to have your LR 2 towed out of the driveway while your wife's 10 year old honda van is flashing up and driving down the road. Embarassed

After talking with the manager he insinuated that it was my fault for leaving it outside in the elements!!!!!

HAAAAA LOL. So much for the ruggedness of LR. I say if you live anywhere north of the 45th parallel (with the exception of balmy Britain) do not buy an LR2...or at least insist on a block heater and then make sure you never venture too far from a power outlet or a toasty warm garage.

Now I am facing a $700+ charge in order to make the vehicle even remotely useable in a Canadian winter....

-10 and no problem Smile

Last winter my FL2 started on first attempt after a night down to -30C. When I started, the temperature was -24C.
A little bit grumpy, but started on first attempt.

This year so far the coldest temperature when starting has been -17C. A little bit grumpy then too, but started on first attempt. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Automatic, Caspian Blue, Alpaca, Moon roof, Exclusive pack.

For anyone interested, I've had a Dealer quote £280 to change glowplugs.
They said they hadn't done any as yet and when I explained my cold start problem to him, went away to have a read through some Land Rover info and came back with "it's more likely to be the fuel injectors"???

Got my FL2 over to the guys at Jamison Land Rover Service Devock, They are an independent outfit, got a loaner FL2 HSE(very nice) came back next morning, they informed me the plugs, battery etc were all working 100%.
They had been told theres a software glitch which another independent auto spark had problems with, so they had re-flashed the ECU, because part of the problem was the ECU was not telling the plugs to come on!
Its not that cold now, but I have noticed the FL2 is starting quicker i.e. there seemed to be a delay when starting recently and its more free revving. Anyhow £50 plus VAT not bad, hopefully during the next cold spell everything will be OK Thumbs Up . WAMMG

It was at an independant Land Rover specialist in Bollington near Macclesfield - not sure if the Forum allows me to say who, but PM me if you want details. I'm just popping out, I may be gone for a while.

Had mine checked by my LR garage today. They are at a loss to explain what the cold starting problem is, so I went away with yet another software upgrade! On the positive side, I enjoyed the 140 mile round trip through the Welsh countryside, and diesel is only 1.339 a litre these days!

OK so youare not allowed to advertise but can you recommend a garage in macclesfield that services Landrovers as i live 15 mile away from Macc and am interested in the Glow Plug theory. Offset your Carbon emissions by boycotting Baked Beans and all Green Vegitables.

Hi it was DSE Land Rover Services Ltd.. They are on the internet. Currently in Bollington, but are about to move to Unit 2,Queens Avenue, Hurdsfield Industrial Estate, Macclesfield. SK10 2GD tel 01625 573 330.

They are independant, but state that the work they do will not invalidate warranty. I found them to be very friendly, and reassuring. They went out of there way to fit me in before I returned home for the weekend. The owner (and I assumereason for the name DSE) is Dave Egan.
Just as an example of the way they work - they saved the faulty glow plugs for me to inspect so that I could see that they were dead.

For the record - I am not connected in any way with DSE - they simply helped me out when working away from home when I needed a reasonably priced and Land Rover competant garage. Given the great service they gave me, I am happy to recommend. Thumbs Up I'm just popping out, I may be gone for a while.

Just an update on my Free landers starting problems, Wednesday it dropped to minus 5, started first time, Thursday minus 4 started again no problems and Friday Minus 2, no problems either, so the re-flashing of the ECU seems to have worked Mr. Green Back in love with the FL2 again. Thumbs Up WAMMG

Part number:LR006857 Error code:P1107

I've had the above temperature sensor showing the above error code replaced today. On a previous vist to the dealer there was a cold starting problem but no error code. Can't quite work that one out!
