Cracked headlight lens

A friend has a cracked plastic headlight lens cover on his 2008 FL2, can you remove the lens cover and replace with a new one, or is it a new headlight Big Cry

I had a look, removed the headlight and the lens is retained with six plastic clips. I dont want to make things worse if the lens is glued in also Confused

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

They are usually glued in but that glue - some sort of silicone - is melting (at least became a lot liquid and you can separte the lens from the body) when warmed up with a hair dryer.

Thanks Alex for your reply.

I have a spare headlight with the same lens cover ( different headlight though) so I will try and remove the lens from this one and install on my friends headlight,

Thanks again Thumbs Up

Yea, but can you just buy the glass? Big Cry Don't put petrol in a diesel. They don't run well.

Normal headlamps are on ebay for around £25 ..... Might be worth a look. Smile

No you cant is the short answer. They are a sealed unit, hence the hairdryer to soften the glue to part them.

But take your time when softening the silicone. It isn't a job for impatient ones.
And be careful because the temperatures at the exit of the hairdryer could be quite high at close range and you can damage the plastic.

Yea but what are you going to replace it with if you can't buy the glass. Thumbs Up Don't put petrol in a diesel. They don't run well.

And another question is how and with what you gonna seal it back?...
Because if it isn't sealed properly the humidity can find its way inside and you'll have a "crying" headlight, because the water will condense, in big quantities, inside the headlight, on the glass...

It's a mod they do on the D3 site. They remove the orange in the headlight and reseal. Off the top of my head, if you watch it, you just reseal it with the same glue you softened to start with, but do a search on the D3 site and all will be explained.

Yea but what will you replace the lens cover with, cos you can't buy it separate. Don't put petrol in a diesel. They don't run well.

Bit of cling film? Dunno, you cant buy the lens separately that I do know. Maybe you could carry out some mods on the headlight, put fairy lights in?
