I took my Freelander to my LR garage to rectify the cold starting problem. They have no idea what is causing the problem. Yet another software update, the usual cure for all ills.

I got quoted around 400£ incl parts and labor for the change.
For those that doesn't get it on warranty feel free to use my case as a ballbreaker
The same cars shouldn't be treated different. As long as you have followed the services there shouldn't be a problem.

I've had a quote of £180 from a non-Land Rover garage to change my glow plugs.
I was unsure whether to go with it in case it turns out not to be them, but having done a fair bit of reading on this now, I think it stands a fair chance this could be the issue.

the LR dealer i took mine too, said its the cold!!! i said the next door neighbour but one has an 04 jeep that doesnt have the problems!!!

The land rover dealer also said they cant check the glow plugs but could see if there are any issues showing up when linked up to the all seeing computer!

Im sure LR wont pay for out of warranty issues such as this, but hey ho, had enough now!

The LR dealer also told me they have had no other issues! keeping shctum me thinks! Anyhoo off oot on me mobike.....

I have a 07 FL2 with 45K on the clock,,,I have followed this thread for a while now, people complaining about their FL2 struggling to start. What I noticed as well were a good few owner's saying that they were experiencing a delay between pressing the start button and the vehicle actually starting to crank over in very cold conditions, this obviously enabling the glow plugs to warm up sufficiently.

What I found strange was my 07 had no delay whatsoever, even when temp's dropped to minus 14 here in Ireland, it just started cranking straight away, and started first time, every time, as if it had been running warm for a good while. Then I took it in for its 3rd service, and the service manager suggested its due a software upgrade, and strangely enough, after the software upgrade, I started notcing a delay between pressing the starter and the vehicle starting to crank. (which I found odd as it was defo not there before) The delay is definitely longer the colder it is, and not there at all when the temps recently climbed back up to positive figures. So would seem to suggest the system warming up the glow plugs, but why wasn't it there before the software upgrade?? I also noticed the cranking time has increased slightly until she actually starts, but no problems starting though!

So definitely seems something to do with the software in my case...

I quoted some time ago that I suspected there to be an issue about different levels of firmware.

In your specific case there are two issues that you should concentrate on.

1. Make sure that the battery in your vehicle is always fully charged, as this has a direct correlation to the cranking speed of the starter motor.

2. The addition of Jaso-FC compliant 2sO in a ratio of 1:200 or even 1:300 will ensure, that the CRD components retain their efficiency even over years of service.

please change the record, we have heard all about your snake all and wonder cures, if the car has a problem then 5 batteries wouldnt start it, never mind trickling a bit more juice into its own battery At work

It is just that I used to do more km's in three weeks, then what most europeans do in a year. With that comes VERY hard earned experience "how not to do things".

So my view is based on lots and lots of practical experience.

Some of you are keen to benefit from that (based on the number of pm's I get) and others prefer a different approach or outlook.

As this is a free forum, everybody can post their opinions. But we must always remember the majority of members or visitors reading this forum's threads are doing so to get useable information.

So when postings are made where the useability index is subzero, then I get active.  With kind regards

One's opinions, experience and informations are always more than welcome on the forum.
But you know, my father used to say that "the tone makes the music" and sometime "the mouth beats the butt".
I believe that some (slight) patronizing comments at some (and sometimes all comunity) makes some users to react in such manner.

as long as you don't use 50ppm or diesel spiked with ethanol (bio diesel) they will.

But as soon as one of those two components is used on your combines/tractors, you will start to experience the tribulations. I am currently staying with one of the product specialists of the Deutz Fahr tractor factory in Germany and we had a long discussion yesterday about the use of bio diesel in tractor and/or normal diesel engine applications. There are increasing levels of engine failures due to abnormally high deposit forming in the engine. This is mainly due to the use of bio diesel. Also increasing levels of injector failure.
