When I took my HGV test I had to go up and down the box, but clutch was allowed. Didn't help much trying to get it down from second to first mind you.
Freelander is the first manual I've had where I don't double declutch. The box is so nice it doesn't need it. Also, i suspect the engine management, which alters the revs when changing gear, interferes.

This would have been about thirty five years ago though, things have changed now, a syncro box on an HGV was only just coming on the market then, a crash box was the norm.
