Pegleg, I agree with you the dipstick is stupid. The most accurate way I have found is to park the car on level ground overnight and check the oil before starting the car in the morning.

I let all the oil out into a measuring jug, note the volume , then pour it back in the engine again At work

several 5l oil jugs, used for topping up tractors, from the 45 gallon drums of oil that I buy , expensive stuff At work
