Hi everyone.

I had the pleasure of driving a TD4 XS manual for 7 weeks when thrifty kindly supplied it instead of the Vectra the company were expecting to be supplied. In those 7 weeks I covered 8,632 miles and it avaraged 42.8 according to the onboard computer. Admitedly most (80%) of this was motorway driving (or parking on the M6). Unfortunately Thrifty phoned me on Wednesday to tell me they needed to of hire it due to the mileage. Big Cry

Good news, they had a new TD4 HSE for me to put another 11,000 miles on. Mr. Green

I'd love to have pretty well any LR with one of their new V8 diesels under the bonnet. However, like most of us, we have to make do with an engine half the size, that being perhaps the FL2. (I'm discounting the petrol jobs - sorry!) And that has a lot to do with the dreaded fuel consumption, and the exorbitant price/tax etc per litre.
I wrote previously that I had proudly achieved 40.5 mpg on my FL1, on a fairly varied route.
We now have Avtur professing to attain more or less the same consumption in his brilliant FL2. And I have seen written calculations to show a massive 48+ mpg on a manual job. However, I thought it impolite to check those figures, especially as the proud owner was obviously cock-a-hoop. I honestly cannot believe these figures. The fuel consumption difference between auto and manual transmission has decreased over the years for most cars (engines), and even though the manual, ie the bod rather than the bot, always comes on top, the discrepancy between auto and manual is too much to believe.

I'm really not sure what point you are trying to make chrissaviss. Your position would be a lot clearer if you came out and called me a liar, which is the inference I take from your comments. I don't understand why you want to take that position, but it's a free country so he-ho you can say what you like.

It isn't a question of me trying to 'big the car up' for the sake of it, just because I own one. If you take the trouble to read the many posts on here you'll see that I, along with many others, have been quite critical about some aspects of the car, its performance and the quality of dealer service. I certainly would not describe the car or ownership experience as being perfect.

However, as far as fuel consumption goes I think the FL2's performance is quite good, and because of the sort of person I am I have more than anecdotal evidence to support my comments, my test run being over 18k miles; so I'm confident to make statements about my experience. If that, for some reason, is not what you want to hear, then so be it. Bottom line is that my average consumption is just a fraction below the official combined figure, given the type of use my car gets that is about right. I've had a similar experience with my previous two cars i.e. my fuel consumption being very close the official combined figure.

If you are not happy with the fuel consumption of your car then look closer to home for the source of the problem rather than have a go at others who appear to be satisfied with this particular aspect of the car's performance

Well, according to my trip computer, with a mix of rural driving and motorways I got an weekly average of about 36mpg with my manual TD4 XS, and just over 37mpg with my manual SE. The auto S I had as a loan car for 4 weeks didn't have a trip computer, but from a full tank I got 460 miles before the fuel light came on, driving on a mix of auto and command-shift. The fuel light comes on with about 50 miles to go, but to err on the side of caution, let's say I would have only got another 40 miles from the tank. So that's 500 miles on a 68 litre tank, which works out at 33mpg, and that was including quite a bit of motorway driving at 80mph. I reckon if I'd driven this like my own two, I could have got a good 35mpg.

So there's 3 cars that say there's something wrong with your car or perhaps your driving? I think rather than be confrontational to just about everyone else's fuel claims you should maybe consider these possibilities?

Hi Goldstone
Yes I have the same situation, I was getting 36.3 before software update, now down to 32.2!
Have Landrover bought shares in Diesel?
I thought updates were to improve things!!!

Hi gang,

Just done a nice round trip from Aberdeen to Worcester and back again (998 miles) and was wondering what others were returning to the gallon ?

Hi Dave
I think a trip to the dealer, it should change at different speeds over distance!!!
Let us know how you get on David

Hi David

Sorry to hear your having the same problem as me makes you wonder how accurate the trip computer mpg reading actually is .Unless you actually fill the tank to the brim then drive till virtually empty or warning light comes on ( if the fuel range can br trusted!) having recorded the mileage .... fun fun fun. Have checked tyre pressure as others have mentioned no problem there , will live with it ....not worth a trip to the dealer .
Rest assured if my mpg suddenly improves it will be of course down to my fantastic driving and nothing to do with my erratic Trip computer Laughing

There's an easier way than that of doing it, which takes the guesswork out of when you've drained the tank:

1: Fill the tank to the brim and reset the odometer
2: Drive a reasonable distance to make sure you're getting a good "average"
3: Refill the tank to the brim, noting from the petrol pump how much fuel it takes to fill it

You've then got distance (Step 2) divided by fuel (Step 3) = average consumption. Voila!

I have had that before I just reset the panel and it updated to a higher MPG, dont know if it does get stuck but I reset mine every now and again.

more mpg on TD4 auto ....

Just been testing out the mpg again on my TD4 SE Auto.

Encouraged by various comments on here, I've just checked my tyres, and upped pressure from 30 / 32 to 34 all around. Then I zeroised my driver display thingy, and set off early this morning to Land Rover Experience site in Ashford, Kent.

Starting from very cold (6C) the intial average mpg was of course awful, taking about 5 miles to get into the 20s mpg, and over 20 miles to get above 30 mpg. Anyway, the average by the time I got to Ashford, 86 miles away was 34.5 mpg. On the way back, this dropped back to 32 mpg before eventually rising to 35.0 mpg overall.

This mileage was about 60% very busy motorway (upto about 85 mph), and the rest was winding country roads (30 - 50 mph).

From recent observations it seems that the mpg only gets good once the engine has done around 20 miles on a trip, despite the fact that the engine temp appears to be normal after a much shorter period.

Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with this latest average mpg Thumbs Up
Life is not a dress rehearsal!

Chrisaviss,

I as Avtur stated am unsure what point you are trying to make. If you are are doubting Avtur's truth then if I were you I should tread a careful path my friend!!. I have only met Avtur through the pleasure of this forum and only once face to face up at Tong. He is a very sincere, respectful chap with nothing to prove, except for honest genuine information to be shared for the benfit of others! He does not benefit from anything he has said and as for being 'cock a hoop' then thats your choice of opinion, whether that was directed at him or me?? If Avtur chooses to drive like Miss Daisy because he enjoys the challenge of acheiving figures for record purposes, good on him. I tried it on my trip to Newcastle to Bedford and back, and did achieve outstanding figures, but could not do that day in day out. Traffic congestion, geography, driving stile all need to factured in. We have nothing to prove by getting these figures except for the challenge of doing it. Do you disbelieve Clarkson's figures in the Audi A8 when he did his trip to Edinburgh, far in excess of Audis figures, but Clarkson did not drive like an arse to achieve it. Perhaps if you want to be 'impolite' and check Avturs and my figures you need to be less of an arse! Currently, my average in my auto is 28.7mpg on this tank.

Yes I love the cars, yes they tick the boxes for my family life, and yes my first car was a real pain in the arse with the electrical problems it had. I am not 'cock a hoop' which is why I rejected the car and got a replacement, and if the new car does the same I will get my money back.... fortunately the new car after 3.5K is still running fine, yes I am pleased with it, yes I get enjoyment from it and yes I will slag it off as I have done when it does not perform, but if you have something to say direct it to the person and have the balls to clearly question them on the subject. Nobody will insult you for challenging them directly, but they will if you call them a liar! I was quizzed on my high mpg and gave my reply, hopefully others could benfit from that....as for Avtur, keep the records going as it is of great interest to most of us, even if unacheivable by some of us in our day to day lives.

Off soapbox now!! Apologies, and not one emoticon was harmed in this rant either!
