Hi guys. I tend to visit the forum when I have a problem. I have a problem. All of last week my lovely 'all terrain' rugged FL2 remained on our driveway. It was minus 11 degrees and the darn thing wouldn't start. Yes, I know, diesel waxing. How infuriating then that my friends diesel RAV didn't fail once. I'm just now wondering why I ever sold mine.
Your suggestions (be kind please) would be appreciated).

Never had a problem with mine last week. The coldest day it was -13C (according to the temp guage). It did take a second or so longer to start which is what I'd expect when its cold. '09 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto

UK winter diesel is OK to -15 degrees before waxing becomes a problem, methinks it's something else

Down to minus 27°C last winter - never experienced diesel waxing.

Are you sure it was diesel waxing??

March this year at Braemar (Hilton Craigendarroch) my FL2 started without any problem at -14 and -16. The only difference was when I pressed start button display showed "awaiting heater plug function" and engine started a few seconds later, a little rough for a second then as normal. Asda fuel.
Current weather with new SD just the same on the coldest mornings, a slight delay after pressing start button then engine cranks and starts perfectly. All FL2's (3) Gone

We have had -20 here in FROZEN Perthshire in the last couple of weeks with snow at least three feet deep. The only two cars moving in these conditions on our street is the neighbours Disco3 and my Freelander. As for starting the car I have had no problem whatsoever - first time every time. The freelander has been faultless!!Mind you I do use the 2s mix that is referred to elswhere in the forum.

I know what it's like falling out with the car, mine is sat on my drivewaysince last week as i've been advised not to drive it until I take it back to have the diff' sorted on the 22nd. I am using my daughters Puma, it's like driving a mario go-kart It's been down to minus 7 here while I was using it last and it laboured a little but started ok.

Really keen to get it back now, i'll be desperate the week after next after approx' another 1000 miles in the Puma

Surely you would know for sure if the diesel had waxed, when we have had diesel wax due to low temperatures which is many years ago now, you had to drop the filters and it would be in the gauze of the glass bowl, we always had to change the filters to eradicate it, it will not normally sort itself out if it has waxed it won't vanish if the weather warms up. Waxing usually causes fuel starvation due to it not being able to get through the filters so blocking up the fuel lines, if it has waxed, normally it would start then after a minute or so cut out due to fuel starvation.

It got down to -18 here in the Scottish borders. I'm guessing it was the diesel as four other disco/FL friends had the same problem. I'm booking her in for a service this week. And what is the 2s mix?
BTW, while I'm here, been getting another niggly problem with the reverse tilt wing mirrors not returning to original position when I put her back in drive. Happens about 50% of the time. LR have looked at the problem twice now and can't find a fault.

When mine failed to start due to waxed diesel I took off the plastic engine cover, and slowly poured 3 buckets of hot water all over the fuel rails / pipes etc. May have been a crazy idea but I was stuck in the mountains with kids and no where to stay.

After a few minutes I tried to get the engine to turn over and it roared ^H^H^H^H^H (spluttered) back into life.

I was using winter diesel so was pretty surprised it gelled.

have had the same problem as you. Here in Norway we have winter Diesel so the waxing part is not the problem. Took it to the dealer and they measured the glow plugs......2 of 4 defect!
The plugs only kick in at low temps so your car will work fine in normal temperatures.
If you can get access to the glow plugs you can ohm them with a standard multimeter.

On-vehicle resistance test
During the on-vehicle resistance test, the first
-multimeter probe must be connected to the glow plug
electrical connector and the second probe must be
connected directly to the engine block or a good earth
point.
Most important tool:multimeter
• Commercially available DMM (digital multimeter)
or multimeter function in IDS
Values:
• Infinite resistance: Glow-plug filament damaged
(glow plug defective).
• Resistance less than 1.0 Ohms: Glow-plug filament
not damaged (glow plug OK). FL2, TD4 HSE
