Does anyone have an electric brake controller fitted?

Where did you locate it?

I am about to fit a Tekonsha prodigy but the best location appears to be mounting it vertically on the side of the centre console just below my left knee and in front of the seat. (Australians drive on the left of the road too.)

Luxury? Absolute necessity and legality if as I you tow anything over 750Kg. Besides going down some of our steep and slippery hills with a 900Kg trailer fully loaded Tvan without brakes is basically suicidal.
Don't tell me you don't have any steep hills worth traversing to camp on over there!

No hills over here Just a mountain to climb and we achieved that on Sat 12-10  Mack

So did you take a trailer over your mountain or not? I gather from the pseudo hilarity you did not.

I also note HSE models have 18" wheels. Not a good idea off-road over here.

Now back to the original topic I asked about: Can anyone provide useful comment on brake controllers? They are a legal requirement in Australia with any trailer over 750Kg.

Smaller wheels have more tyre. basically more to absorb the potholes and rough roads. You don't want to go offroading in 40-profile tyres now do you!

The brake system over here is a very simple one, as I understand the system you mean lets you apply the trailer brakes, rather than the over run system we use. There is no off road caravanning here, our caravans wouldn't stand up to it! D4 HSE Lux for me

Hi mate,

We've got the same brake controller on a D3 but that's not going to help you.

I suggest you mount it in the hole in the centre of the dash where the sat nav should be. This would make the override switch easy to reach in the event you need to use it.

But no as I intend mounting my car PC, audio system & GPS there when I get it finished.

17" gives a much wider choice of light truck construction tyres which are much better on our flinty outback roads and as Krankyd points out gives better tread life and puncture resistance. Tyre choice is also limited when outback or in the Simpson Desert.

17" tread is also more useful than 18" for achieving floatation over mud or sand by dropping tyre pressures. Regards Ub2

I was thinking about putting a CarPC in but couldn't find a screen that would fit nicely so I put it on the backburner.

I'd be interested to see what you do tho?

Like me, Ub2 is from Down Under - here we have real outback/offroad/bush conditions and by law everything over 750kg needs to have brakes. Ub2 was getting a TVAN - a real offroad camper trailer - see http://www.tracktrailer.com.au. I'm also considering that or one of these http://www.kimberleykaravans.com. As you can imagine, brakes are not optional for these

You mis understand. Caravans do come with brakes fitted here as standard however they are not electric ones like you have in Australia.
All but the smallest trailers need brakes as well.
I hope this ends the confusion.
