When I did it it simply was just to see whether or not the engine would shut down & to my horror it did though I have to say I didn't do it in a dangerous location....

seriously though arse recognition would be good, sit down the car recognises you and starts, easy.

keyless entry struggles with a thatcham cat security system standards on the less expensive cars circa below 60k so a lot of manufactures have at least a remote lock and some sort of key insertion method Thumbs Up

Wales 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black

Some years ago, my Vauxhalls' engine cut out (main relay failed) while i was pulling out on an 'A' road.
I managed to get out of the way of a oncoming heavy vehicle on the starter motor by turning the key whilst in gear with the clutch fully engaged.
Hope the same scenario doesn't happen with my FL2 Whistle

As pegleg says, the start button is all part of getting 5***** ncap rating... that and the seatbelt warning!

You find lots of cars have got them now, and to be honest it does not bother me.. I think you just need to know how it works and have some faith in the technology Thumbs Up

I know a few 'older' generation who, because they dont fully understand things, tend to be a bit scared of new things... know how it works, and believe in it and there should be no problems!

As for starting a stalled car whilst sliding down an icy hill – I’m not sure push button or not I would have got it started again! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

I'm 'older generation' and admit that I don't understand much but seem to remember having a 1961 Mini Countryman with a push-button engine start. What goes round, comes round, as they say.

The Dip Switch was foot operated, the start button was operated by your Left Thump, located just in front of the drivers seat (So I am told) honest Whistle

Many thanks for all the replies. I feel fairly certain that I didn't hit the start/stop button as both hands were on the wheel at the time. It was probably more likely to be braking quite firmly (wrongly I know) when I could feel the car starting to slide. Maybe with more experience I will be able to negotiate this kind of thing more easily, but I was surprised how difficult it was to think how to re-start the car whilst sliding sideways and trying not to hit anything! I wonder if they cover this type of thing on the LR Experience courses, something I'm hoping to do in the very near future.

You don't say if it is a manual or auto but if it is a manual is it possible that you were going down the hill slowly perhaps with your foot on the brake and all four wheels locked on the ice, therefore being a manual it would have stalled. Just a thought Question

Come on own up, who's done a field test today???

Mine won't turn off while moving no matter how many times I push it.
It did turn off at 2 mph with the clutch in as I came to a stop.
