Hand Brake Saga

I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem. You have your hand brake serviced and they charge you an arm and a leg, only to find the 2 months later it may as well not be there. So you take it back for them (morrisons of stirling) (not the supermarket) Laughing fix and they want to charge you for the work Censored Yet 2 months later the dam thing fails to hold little old landy steady on the smallest incline. Me thinks i have an elastic band for a hand brake cable. Any thoughts would be most Bow down

Rolling with laughter I'd like to see you do it in 30 seconds.

It should hold on a 1 in 10 at 3 clicks.

Procedure to adjust should be to slacken off all the cables. Adjust shoes to fully hard on and then release 7 clicks. Then adjust cables to 3 clicks to hold, not max.

Lever load should be around 275 nm.

If it doesnt hold then then bed in by driving along and pulling on hand brake for a while on and off. Then go back to basic adjustments.

Hey up mate. 275 Nm is a pretty specific figure. Could I ask where you get this information from? (I'm not taking the P**s btw). We Don't Care About Pot Holes !!

The dealer technique that i witnessed, and have used myself is to release the lever, pry up the rear cointray, finger tighten the adjuster, replace cointray, job done.

I always for some reason thought Morrison's had a good reputation and was considering using them for my next service rather than one of the Glasgow dealers.

but I've heard a few bad comments about them recently, and may reconsider my plans !!

what do you think rkhazelwood ?

hi guys, the best way to adjust the hand brake properly is to do it at the rear wheels with the adjusters, not the 17mm nut behind the coin tray, also if you've got the wheels off, check the hand brake spreaders as these always sieze at the point where the handbrake doesnt hold and yet it seems to be sticking on. they all do that!

Sorry should be around 275 Newtons, not Nm. Obviously not enough water in it Smile

Lever load should be in the range of 130 to 300 I believe with around 275 being an optimum.

Setting procedure is to let off the cables and set the shoes to full on and then release the adjuster 7 clicks. Then set cables so that shoes hold at 3 clicks.

Spreaders as someone has pointed out can seize but I think that problem has been fixed now.
