Norway 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Tambora Flame

Hi Athelstan.

Do you know where the webasto is situated? Front right, but where exactly?
Also can she use it as a parking heater or just a extra heater when the engine is running?

Regards
Eirik

do you have the FBH on the Mrs' car? if so is it worth it Question

Her ladyship's FL2 has an FFBH fitted. The original unit stunk like hell when in operation last winter. We complained, they check it out and said it was okay. We continued to complain and then her ladyship being a Doctor wrote a letter telling them of the negative health effects of unburnt diesel fumes inside a closed space aka the interior of her FL2.

Within days the Dealer in a 3hr operation took a new FFBH unit of a showroom stock FL2 and fitted that to her ladyship's FL2. That was in late April and the days n nights too warm to test its efficacy.

Week commencing 25th October we were down to just 2°C at 05:00hrs so for that week the FFBH fired every morning and late evening. Absolutely perfect in operation and no smells inside the FL2.

As for, quote "is it worth it". I've no idea what its unit cost is as it comes as standard here in CH on diesel models. But, yes the cabin interior gets warmer quicker. And if you add that to heated front seats at minus 20°C in January when she's on an early start at the hospital then yes it is a piece of excellent "comfort kit".

1: The Webasto FFBH is located in front of the r/h footwell bulkhead. If you face the front of the FL2 and you look into the engine compartment in the area of the left front wheel you will not see it, as it is located low down behind the plastic bulkhead trim channels that drain away rain & screen washer fluid.

The best and easiest way to see it is to have the FL2 up on a ramp, then look to the rear edge of the front near side wheel and scan the rear of the wheel arch black plastic shield. Underneath there you will see a small metal hollow tube circa 5mm dia., hanging down - that's the FFBH's exhaust pipe. Follow that pipe upwards and you'll see the Webasto cylindrical unit.

I'm sure if you ask "Alex" or "Lars" they'll send you a pdf of the installation out of a LR workshop service manual.

2: Here in CH it cannot be used as a "parking heater" due to concerns over its exhaust gases. Most Swiss live in apartment blocks and have underground communal car parking. If everyone had FFBH's then those garages would be very harmful to breath in. Thankfully we live in our own house surrounded by open space.

3: The FFBH runs as an aid to delivering cabin heat whilst the diesel engine gets up to normal operating temperature and so can deliver warmth on its own accord. The Webasto however does not deliver extra heat in super quick time, but it does speed up the process and shortens the time taken for hot air to be delivered into the FL2's cabin.

4: I'm confident also that the Webasto unit cannot be configured to run as a parking heater in the FL2.

5: There is a better alternative: Eberspächer have pre heaters for FL2's that can be configured to run also as a parking heater. According to my authorized Eberspächer installation agent back in Derbyshire UK the price is approx:GBP600 installed (price is model/feature dependent). Here in CH they are 35% more expensive.

Trust all that helps.

Thank you so much Mr. Athelstan!
That's some good info right there Smile Bow down
My plan is to at least get the FFBH started without having the engine running so that I can have a warm engine when I start her up. I think getting the fans to run is a whole nother story with the equ and the can-bus. Sad

Let you all know. FL2, TD4 HSE
