United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e S Manual Santorini Black
A Rattling Good Motor !!!

Hello All..

Just wondering if this is normal on the freely with the TD4 engine.

Everything was just fine when I got it new back in May of this year, but as the weather has changed now and its a bit colder the engine seems to rattle when I'm driving out of the road for a few miles untill it warms up? Especially in 2nd and 3rd gear.

Sounds like its pinking...... But the dealer told me on the phone that they can't pink? I find that strange as I thought all cars can pink if say the timings out.

Mines a manual with 4k miles on the clock. Low mileage I know but I would have thought these engines would get better with the more miles you put on them?

Anyone else experienced this? telfire

Mine is just the same with a similar mileage too. The colder it gets, the noisier it sounds! It was similar with the Golf and BMW, although a fair bit worse with the FL2.
I tend to sit with the engine ticking over for a minute or so with a gentle squeeze of the throttle every now and then, "usually out before the Mrs" it could be my imagination but it seems a bit quieter when setting off if I do it that way. I might try some 'Mobile 1' synthetic before it gets really cold.

Quick update..........

Phoned the dealer this morning who assures me it should'nt be like this. So the car is now booked in for Tuesday next week. Gonna drop it off in the evening the night before so that they can have it with a stone cold engine to see / hear it for themselves. Said they will lend me a courtesy car!

Now if they wanted to earn some brownie points they could have lent me a Range Rover Sport as I'm tempted to change to one of those soon...! especially if they can't sort mine out.

To be honest its a nice care, but I've never experienced this on a new car before. My old Astra Estate TDI had 50k on the clock and was as sweet as a nut all the time I had it. telfire

Its called diesel knock and all diesel engines do it and yes the colder it gets the louder it will be to a certain degree.
The deisel engine works by compression ignition and will produce a louder knocking noise when very cold.
If you have excessive diesel knock it might be that the ignition timing is out thats pretty much what they will check on your visit to the dealers.
All new deisels now have much better sound proofing now than years ago so things sound much more quite Thumbs Up

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

I collected my new GS Auto on 1st March and drove to Braemar for a short holiday. The snow in hotel car park was height of car roof.
Next morning when starting, I pressed start button and display showed "awaiting heater plug function" then about 7 seconds later the starter motor engaged and engine started. It was very noisy"diesel knock" but soon smoothed down to normal. Temp reading was MINUS 14.
Diesel knock when cold is normal as excess fuel is injected to aid cold start. All FL2's (3) Gone
