Andy - you are either one very brave - or - foolish chap. If you don't mind answering: where was that fine photograph taken and under what circumstances enabled you to be so close?

I was in Thailand at a monastery where they took in 'status pets' from owners too stupid to realise the long term consequences of owning 'exotic' animals. This fella was raised in captivity and was well fed, but I did have to sign a disclaimer since a few people had been mauled to death there. I was quite surprised to see his response to me scratching the back of his neck - much like any domestic cat would behave! Hence the expression on his face. Not quite as adventurous as your story! I hope you have photos??
Need me to donate some for that expanding forehead? |

Answer: Yes - it was back in '97. Yes photographs were taken of the event in October'97 by a Canadian photographer who was commissioned by Canadian National Geographic to do a photo-story on the railway to Churchill (Hudson Bay) re its use in summer months to export vegetable crops from Canadian and USA farmers to European markets. The shipping route out of Churchill is the shortest sea route to Europe - frozen solid though for 7mths of the year (global warming has probably lengthened the "ice free" period now). Her work went into print around Q1 '98 if I remember correctly (and that should be in CNG's now online library). I'll not name her as we were seeing each other at the time. I do have prints of the time we were together, and certainly that incident and the hand/paw comparison but finding them quickly would be beyond me - you should see the state of my study, but I'll have a go - he was a big fellow - and as one of the Ranger's said: "if you ever get this close again you'll probably not live to tell the tale". |
