Haldex oil - what does it smell like?

I know this might be to some a strange question but as the title suggests what does the Haldex oil smell like?
And how much would it need to loose before the Haldex unit stopped working/was damaged?

Poking around underneath tonight I noticed that the fuel tank guard was damp, which I thought a little strange as the roads have been dry for days. What looks like the Haldex solenoid is dripping fluid. Now it could be gear oil from the diff, but doesn't smell like gear oil. It could be fuel from the tank above, especially considering my poor fuel consumption, but it doesn't smell like diesel and is thicker.

It smells slightly sweet and is about as thick as transmission fluid.

Picture of damp haldex unit - difficult to take as fuel tank protection plate is in the way.

Damp protection plate - now you can see why pictures are difficult to take. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Haldex oil is kind of transmission oil.
And transmission oils have a slight smell of garlic.
Is it your case?

hi mate, haldex oil is very thin and smells slightly like plastic. do not try to refill, there is a specific procedure where you hve to fill then take some out and turn the ignition on for a few mins. they all do that!

Rear diff pinion oilseal has apparently given up the ghost.
New one was fitted Friday.

Interesting this is the third FL I have had and they have all eaten the pinion oil seals at some point.
Get the feeling I am doing something wrong. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
