Digital Radio

Hello,

This is my 1st post , new member , so go easy on me Razz

Just wondering, do all Freelander 2 models come with Digital Radio capability, there is a digital sign on the FM button & i have had a look in the handbook but can not seem to get it to work.

I have a Freelander 2 XS model.

Welcome. Ahh, Digital radio. If you refer to DAB, then well according to all the literature in the past, the HSE model should have had it as standard. It doesn't.

The short answer is no, sorry. The "digital" "Refers to the tuning Sir..." Hi Darling, I'll be home in 10 mins. If I'm not back, please read this message again...

I suppose most of you already know that the previous goverment intended to phase out the main FM stations in favour of DAB. Dunno if the new lot intend to do the same.
DAB is fine in a car; in fact as far as traffic info is concerned it can be a real help as the new TPEG head units will prove.
But what will happen to those who still have analogue head units when FM is phased out? I don't want to have one of those useless DAB 'add on's' with yet another aerial dangling about.

And my domestic hi-fi sounds much better on FM than DAB.

Keep FM alive Bow down

It may be that when normal radio starts to phase out there will be a sudden rash of DAB conversions on the market. As soon as everyone has bought one the price will halve. It will be interesting to see if they all work everywhere, since there are various different DAB systems around, even in Europe (can anyone tell me whether the current in car system will work in other countries?). Until then it's just the plug-in adaptor I suppose. eg http://pure.com/products/index.asp?Category=In-Car

'Fraid so. And they all need a decent aerial. Don't want trailing wires in my car either. Just want FM, that's all.
I do agree that DAB is better in a car providing the signal is good, but i don't need it at home cos it sounds really crap on my hi fi compared to FM cos of compression.
All i'm saying is what's wrong in having both?

My RRS has both DAB and FM - I am not impressed Shocked

DAB constantly goes on and off locally. On long runs I have to retune because it keeps trying to connect to home mast not strongest signal. Big Cry

It was a standard feature but I would not pay extra to have it added Evil or Very Mad

I believe Analogue being phased out only applies to TV not FM at present Question Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Lets hope that FM stays, but i've a nasty feeling that all the mainstream stations will go DAB. I've had several emails from Goverment Depts who seem pretty instant.
Many stations can be broadcast on one multiplex unlike FM; therefore it's cheaper.
But what moving parts are wearing out prevent broadcasting FM? None.

If these goverment Censored can't see sense, i'm gonna start a 'Keep FM alive' campain.
Anyone with me on this??

Freel FM. I like it!!!

Once FM is phased out, it'll only be used for local stuff thus rendering your car and any other analogue radio's/ tuners that you have about the house useless for mainstream broadcasts. What they are trying to do is increase the bandwidth of DAB by getting rid of FM. But they arn't taking into consideration the end user. Do you really want to go the expense of replacing all your analogue radio's/tuners? And these plug in DAB devices for your car are really crap; all it does is transmit the DAB signal to your FM head unit using FM radio waves!! And they need yet another aerial. I've tried a 'Pure Highway' and it was really crap. I kept loosing the signal and couldn't read what it was tuning while i was driving. Not safe.

I'm not anti DAB, i've got a DAB tuner for my hi fi; but must admit that the sound quality is nowhere near FM. I use it for 'Planet Rock' only.
But once the new digital TPEG head units arrive for cars, it will be more than useful.
Except for those of us with FM/AM only. Who will only be able to receive local stuff.

The whole issue is not thought out properly.
