Rear disc pad thickness

2007, TD4, manual, 32k miles. I have just replaced all 4 wheels and tyres with a nearly new set and whilst doing so I checked the thickness remaining on the disc pads. I was surprised to see the front ones were about 7mm thick whilst the rear ones were only about 4mm. I would have expected the rear to be thicker unless as new they were designed to be thinner. By the way I will have some XS/SE 17 inch spare wheels and used tyres for sale but will put them in another topic in due course.

When I went for my LRE day, the instructor told me they were replacing a lot of rear pads on the freelys. He'd even been onto LRUK to ask if they were a diferent compound, but they said no, and couldn't explain it. We Don't Care About Pot Holes !!

Bit strange really.
As CG has pointed out in a previous post, they are not even used by the handbrake so it can't be attributed to sticking hand brakes. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

bizzare, its normally fronts wear first as they do the bulk of the braking.

Could it be that the brakes are setup to have more rear bias? to stop the front diving under heavy braking?

Same thing happens to me having the i6 model. I was thinking that the power of i6 will cause the front pads to wear out faster, but the front ones are lasting for 50.000Km and the rear for about 35.000Km. I have done 90.000Km in total, I have replaced 2 times the rear pads and 1 time the front ones.

Like I said about the LRE. You certainly don't brake going up-hill. The only logical explanation is a rear end bias. We Don't Care About Pot Holes !!

3 causes for rear pad wear.
A) Rear pads have smaller surface area.
B) 4x4 vehicles are heavier at rear than standard front wheel drive cars.
C) If used unladen and with just driver most of time brake balance will reduce effort to rear, this you might think would result in Less wear but as as such discs are much more prone to surface corrosion which in turn wears pads.

(New shape Honda CRbuncle does not make first service without rear discs and pads) All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

Fairly sure the rear discs are thinner than the front ones from new.

According to the Pagid website replacement pads differ in thickness when new by 4mm. (rears thinner)
