Rotating tyres to even out wear

With the Freelander 1 the handbook said that when tyres needed to be replaced the new tyres should go on the back. As the front tyres wear faster this meant having new tyres put on the front rims and the part worn rear tyres put on the front, or replacing all four tyres.

Some owners used to rotate the set of tyres every 5,000-6,000 miles to even out the wear and I do this for the CR-V as that is recommended in the handbook.

What do you guys do? Andyfr

I don't, so long as there is plenty of tread, thats okay. I change at 2-3mm to the same make/model as per originals. In honesty I'd rather buy 2 tyres than 4 at the one time.

Tyres

I replaced all four tyres not that long ago and the original ones all wore down at the same rate. I never changed them around at all, infact they never came off the car as there was no puntures to mend etc. All had wear evenly. Thumbs Up

If the fronts wear quicker than the rear then I rotate them so they are all due at once, but doing a bit of towing ours wear at pretty much the same rate.

Most manufactureres recommend putting new rubber on the back now for one simple reason...a rear end slide is harder to correct than a front end slide! No joke! Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Officially the tyres should be swapped on the same axle at service but not rotated (see service schedule). One reason for rotating them used to be to include the spare, but that's no longer too relevant! My last set wore down pretty evenly and I replaced the lot at about 34000 miles and 2-3mm, keeping the best one for my spare.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will leave them alone and just monitor the wear.

Just going to pop out and see my new GS auto at the dealers. Very Happy Andyfr

MacRae and Dicks? They had as couple of 11MY GS's in the rear compound yesterday. A grey one and a black one I think. The grey one had a big scratch down the drivers door, but they were respraying it today, so should all be fine.
