Loss of Power

Hi, New to Forum so please be gentle.

I purchased my freelander2 TD4 HSE on September 1 this year and having never owned a Landrover before I am over the moon with my purchase. However on Wednesday this week I experienced a loss of power which resulted in me not being able to go over 3000rpm. This happened just prior to and following me refuelling. Admitedly i had let the range get to almost zero but in my defence I had no other option! Strangely having contacted my local dealer the following morning the problem rectified itself and has not arisen since. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Does the Freelander2 have a secret economy setting that I haven't read about?

Hi BigAde

Firstly, let me offer you a very warm welcome to the “Freel2” forum Thumbs Up

Now on to your question.........

There’s a system on the FL2 that prevents the car from actually running out of fuel.

It monitors the fuel pressure & levels, when you are getting low on fuel the engine will reduce in performance, as a kind of warning & I guess fuel saving measure too.

Then if you continue to drive, the system will eventually shut down the engine.

My understanding is that is to save damage being caused to the high pressure fuel systems, on the diesels in particular. As if you run the car out of diesel, the high pressure in the fuel system, can cause untold damage. “You feel uneasy, as the mad scientist locks the door behind you & dissolves the key in a vat of Acid”

Hi Freddy

What a warm welcome! I dont feel like the awkward new kid anymore!

Your answer has put my mind at ease and therefore is much appreciated. I must admit having been an interested observer on this forum since i made my purchase I was a little worried that my car had started to develop one of those little niggly faults that other members have posted. Being as this is not the case, fingers crossed mine is running like a dream!

Hi Big Ade, welcome!

I think you are in the fortunate position where the technology on the vehicle has done exactly what it should do, (as per Freddy) well done Thumbs Up

Don't be afraid to ask any questions, we were all newbies once! We'll all chip with answers to car related questions, but you may have noticed we have a resident comedian, namely 'carlfraz', he'll chip with a ton of innuendo laden quips, but that just adds to the fun of the forum. Hi Big Ade,

Glad you found us!!! and don't listen to them about me I'm not the one posting phalic symbols on the forum of towbars!!! Laughing Laughing

The benefit you will have being the newbie is hopefully we have all experienced the problems you have had or got, and many more I hope you don't get!! Only one or two have had serious failure, and a couple or three of us are on our second cars.....so despite the problems we had we still loved the cars and still do. My auto is an absolute dream and avtur qzx and I are hoping to detail our findings 'offroading' tomorrow.

Keep in touch fella and get posting, even if it stuff you are pleased about.....we are to too quick to moan so it nice to balance it up with praise too Thumbs Up

I have had a very similar problem, Big Ade, - have a look at

http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic763.html

After the dealer looked at it, found nothing, and did the software update I haven`t had another problem.

(Looking at the members map, you`re only down the road from me.)

Hello,

You could be a victim of the Reduced Engine Power syndrome, which is/was fairly common for TD4s with Automatic.
If so, there is a new software package available from the factory. I had the power loss problem several times, and the car had to be taken back for 3 weeks until new software available. Now seems to be OK.

Hello everybody!

I have the following problem with my '08 Freelander 2 2.2 diesel automatic, please tell me if it could be related to the fuel economy system on the car.
The problem became obvious after increasing the engine's power with a chiptuning, remapping or whatever it's called.
The car drove very well in "normal" driving conditions. If I put the car in the sport mode and gave it full throttle, initially it pulled very well but in the 4th or 5th gear at about 4000 rpm the car started to lose power. If I pushed the brake a liitle bit the car drove normally afterwards. There was no fault on the car's BC or on the fault reader.
Then I asked the guys that did the new software to put the original software back on the car.
The result was that the car "almost" drove fine. I mean I had to drive it quite a while in sport mode at full throttle constantly and only at 140-150 kmh the problem appeared. Again, there was no fault stocked.
Each time the fuel tank was at about 1/4 th.
Could it be that the instant fuel consumtion was so high in full throttle that the computer calculated that the car would soon ran out of fuel?
Any other ideas are appreciated.
Thanks.
