If I remember correctly the regulations used to include specifications for the power of stop, tail and indicators. These are based on incandescent bulbs and normally they are defind by the power consumption and not the light output. If you had a set of LEDs that could draw 21 watts the following drivers would need sunglasses.

Missing link is quite correct. The design of the reflector, lens and wiring volt drop are all designed to meet a ISO pre-determined candle watt output using the standard incandesent bulb.

I'm not exactly sure on the laws of modifying to LED lights, but if you really wanted to you can replace the rear number plate light. I replaced mine with white LEDs and they look fantastic in the dark. A slight blue glow, similar to what you see on Lexus. And you don't have to worry about the voltage drop. |
