RANT: Why the BMW X3 is crap!

If you want to get through some snow in winter and are obsessed with a BMW badge then this car is for you. Other than that there is no reason for buying one.

It is ugly. It cannot get through as much snow or wade as deeply as an FL2. It is useless off road compared to an FL2. It is expensive to buy. Yes you can buy a bloody quick model such as the twin turbo diesel but if you want a fast spacious beemer then buy a 3 series touring.

If you want the executive clout of a BMW badge then buy a 3 or 5 series and struggle in winter because this may get you through in snow but other than that it is ugly and does not have the road presence of an FL2.

Of course I am biased but why spend more money on an X3 when you can save money and buy the vastly superior FL2.

the BMW are good well built cars and indeed the 3 and 5 series cars are perhaps the best package saloons in the world in terms of build quality/driveability/mechanical innovation, etc , so I certainly disagree with your comments.

the X3 and even the X5 are not marketed as offroad vehicles in the same way as Landrover, it is their onroad capabilties that sell them.

i have had 2 X3's and 1 x5 now in new fl2
X5 was sheer luxury X3 s great to drive great handling as all of the bmws i have had have been (8 in total) that said did lot to tear me away from the bmw badge to the FL2
i really like my FL 2 and its a great car to have and the price was factor when buing new here in nz the luxury of leather seats climate etc auto and rain sensors lights etc made sense as came in cheaper tahn the new and bloody aweful and small new X1 which is the most pointless car and most disappointing BMW ive ever seen! Thumbs Up

To Iain Cooper:

I think the 3 series and 5 series are superb no question and the build quality of BMW's is great and no doubt the X3 will handle well. I still cannot see why anyone would want one though when such as our beloved FL2 does the same job for less but does it much better. If you want 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' then this is not it. Buy a rear wheel drive beemer. The ride is too harsh in the X3. The FL2 soaks up bumps and just looks great where the X3 is too hard and too ugly. As I said, you can buy a quick one but again, WHY?!

Buy a 3 or 5 series if you want a beemer. Not a hideous X3.

Lots of hands up to that!!!

This obviously isn't an opinion that is shared, but when I was working at BM a couple of years ago I used to think that some of the materials used in the cabin were slightly suspect...not fitting of such a premium brand.

The X3 was definately the worst Very Happy Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

I do agree that the FL2 is overall a better vehicle than the X3..............that is why I bought one !!

but I don't knock BMW because I drive a FL2, as I do appreciate why people buy BMW instead of Landrovers, and it's not for their offroad attributes.
( indeed I know a few people who swear by the X5 and would never touch a Landrover.......but each to his own )

See below link and watch Clarkson showing us that yes the X3 can handle but other than that it is useless.

Missing the point here. Or not.
Buy things made in the UK if you can, full stop. No matter what it is.
I've never bought a car made anywhere else.
And bloody well proud of it too!!

in fairness to the X3, this was 6 years ago, and the current model is a far better car. ( just like the FL2 is compared to the FL1 )

and again the X3 is not first choice if going offroad.
