2007 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Zermatt Silver

DPF issues

Greetings - I am currently an X-trail (sorry if that is seen as swearing) owner but am considering Part Xing for a Freelander. Whilst the Xtrail is a good car when not in limp mode there are many issues with the DPF clogging and the car then going into limp mode thru non-regeneration. Whilst Nissan recognise it as a fault they blame the driving style because "I am not going fst enough for long enough !!!!" - debunks their urban myth advert somewhat !

I would appreciate any advice on known problems with the Freelander in this respect. I do not regularly travel mega distances and most of my driving is short hops. Thanks for any help

Current FL2 does not have a DPF (in the UK at least), so no issue for you.

Make sure you avoid the revised version which will be in dealers shortly, as this does have a DPF to meet EU5 regs.

I the UK, the DPF is now standard on all FL2 models. However, if you're in the used market then anything UK spec MY10 or before will be DPF-free!!

joe MY11 Fuji white Td4 150 GS straight up no mixer.

Thanks Mr Moo - in my ignorance I thought all new cars had to have them fitted from last year ?

Thanks for this Joe - do you know when they started fitting them and how can I tell if one is fitted or not as I understand it was an option from about 2007 ?

AFAIK, the DPF was option/standard in EU-land only up until now, I doubt anyone would choose to have one fitted!
If on doubt get the dealer to sign saying it does't have one and if it does kick his/her ass!!

Edit: I've just had a look at the MY10 spec list on the web and it doesn't mention the DPF anywhere MY11 Fuji white Td4 150 GS straight up no mixer.

My understanding is DPF will be standard on all MY11 Freelander 2

2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Santorini Black

Ordered my HSE TD4e back in April without any mention of DPF filters and options. Picked her up late June and page 95 of the manual mentions the DPF filter as if it's standard fit, no mention of 'optional extra' or 'if fitted'.

With the amount of smoke ours 09 HSE kicks out when flooring it after pottering about it definately doesn't have one!

I managed to almost obscure an entire speed camera van on tues Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Well done Dave, maybe try and add some type of flame thrower device and try again. The camera van will be trashed and they'll be none the wiser it was you

If this is your daily routine, then you may have problems with FL2 DPF too.
In order to burn the particles inside DPF and to clean it, the exhaust must be taken to a certain higher temperature. This is done by cruising at high RPM (not necessarly speed) for a specific amount of time. During short hops this cant be done. So the dealer could be right about "You're not going fast enough for long enough !!!!"
Of course there is a DPF cleaning process which is started automatically by the car as soon as it thinks that DPF needs cleaning. But this process also takes time and also could be ended prematurelly by those short hops.

So what's going to happen in say 4-5 yrs time? Where no matter if you buy new or used it will almost certainly have DPF .....and your a person who's daily routine IS the short driving hops? I would imagine there are loads of people that fall into that category (I for one am fortunate enough to work about 3 miles from where I live) Are we going to have examples of "Mum doing the 2 mile round trip to Tesco and making it last 10 just to avoid getting error messages and limp home modes?" Rather makes a nonsense of the Eco' mentality being bashed into us at the moment!!

You didn't pay attention to the PDF file. Read on the last page, last paragraphs. They reffer to people like you...
