Air Con smell

I noted a few weeks ago that when I started the car or after running with the air con on and then turning to econ mode there was a smell coming from the vents. Initially this smelled like a burning smell so I called Land Rover assist who had the AA out within an hour. The AA guy couldn’t find a problem and said if the smell persist to contact my local dealer, as my car was due its second service a week later I left it until the service.

At the second service they could not find any problems. It’s been a week with the smell again and I have called Land Rover assist again today, the AA guy that came said it may be the system needing cleaned out.

Has anyone else had similar problems and was it fixed under warranty? The AA guy recommended a aerosol which "smoke bombs" the inside of the car and cleans the air vents - This is fine if that’s what is needed but I never had to do that to my old car and it was 15 years old!

thanks,

Switched my aircon on today and there was a horrible damp smell. Could be due to never using it since last summer? Very Happy Very Happy

Aircon systems when not in used for a long time ie over winter are prone to bacteria breeding in the filter. You could try changing the pollen filter where they breed and i think there is a spray or tablet that can be put in there to kill of any remaining bugs. The smell that you are smelling is the waste product brom the bacteria

Waiting to get my AC compressor replaced, but have on occasion had a smell when first switching on.
The best advice I have heard is to switch it on at least once a day when your driving, as this prevents the seals from drying out and to give it an occasional blast on cold to kill off any bacteria.

Thumbs Up

Richard I have the A/C on permanently as well.
Our LR dealer told us to do so as it almost always prevents bacteria build-up, failed seals and horrid smells. And, our manual TD4-e always clocks 800kms per tank full of fuel, so the aircon is not severely impacting on fuel efficiency - unlike most folks' right foot.

I never feel the need to use the aircon as I would much rather open a window, but my wife is always asking for the window to be shut and the aircon put on................typical !!

but after reading these posts I will use the aircon more often to keep it running sweet.

Once you've got the smell it won't go until it's been cleaned out.

Comma sell one of the 'bombs' in Halfords for about a tenner. You put it in the back of the car on the floor, set it going, then shut all the windows and doors and leave the air con on full re-circulate for about 10 mins (without being in the car yourself!)

This cleans all the bacteria from the system, and also your interior.

Another this worth noting, when the a/c is set to re-circulate the cabin air, this speeds up the build up of condensation in the system. Just something to think about if you use re-circulate a lot. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

I tried the comma smoke bomb thing from halfords yesterday, so far so good but waiting to test out on the way to work this week. If it works fine I will use maybe once a year to clean out the system.

Thanks
