I didn't see the BBC TV news so I don't know whether it was reported that JLR are intending to assemble vehicles in China. The BBC News website has the following report:

My objections are not primarily from a build quality standpoint, although I would anticipate some such issues - I'm more against further dilution of brand identity, loss of UK industry, unnecessary shipping and unsustainable manufacturing concentration in the far east.

Maybe I am missing the point, either we do our best to support UK manufacturing or we turn into service sector economy - like Greece. If we really wanted unbeatable value for money and guarentees that lasted 5 years we would have bought either Korean or Japanese. No we bought into brand image and off road ability - and to be honest a bloody good car. When it comes to Rover cars built abroad - do you remember the city Rover (Indian?), I do, what a pile of scrap, mother in law had one - briefly. Sorry Ev no a pop at you, you are as entitled to your opinion as i. Rant over. Just been in manufacturing for too long, heartbroken to see what successive governments have done to it in favour of London centric "banking" and investment. Good chance if LR start to Manufacture in China our FL2 will have to last a long time Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner |

Few years away. For the chinese market only to save on import tax etc. Will use old fl2 equip. We will be on lr3 by then. X type press dies gone to india. Old british cars are still "new" over there. Selling sh**loads over there helps the uk ops. Some manfs do it why not us? Live your life be free-lander |

I was in Shanghai recently and learned that BMW manufacture there for the chinese market but people with enough money still pay double for a european built import - more as a status symbol than anything, but it does happen.

All the cars in our household (FL2, Mini, Honda) were bought on the basis of being built in this country. I'm not that interested in who owns these companies but I do like to support the British workforce, and they're all good cars, as it happens. Everything else I own is built in China |

Agree wth the CityRover as that was not a good move at all but are you aware of which Company made the CityRover Or Indica as is originally? TATA as in the current owner of Landrover! I am all for keeping production in this Country & it really annoys me all the manufacturing we have lost. I see the point of keeping the brand unique in having all production in this Country. Blame British Aerospace & the Government as if they hadn't sold out Rover Group to BMW who raped it then LR may still be 100% British. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red. This is the main reason I allways bought Rover, Austin & MG cars & FL1. Keep my money in this country. Wouldn't have a French car if it was given to me & why so many of us buy them is beyond me given the French's attitude to the British! (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red. Given the lack of cash they had in the pot they did a pretty good job. There were many problems in the group, some of them home grown like the head gasket issue & the pension fund (post 2000 era) but they had to pick up the pieces after BMW raped the business taking LR & the Mini brand, then WSR went bust in 2002 which was a research & design company given the job of designing the all new Rover 45 this lost over £100,000,000 & 3 to 4 years in bringing out a new model. I have to admit that in 2005 I bought a brand new MG ZR-Express Van which was a special order & in 2006 a brand new (dealer stock) Rover 25GSi & the ZR only went back to the dealer once other than annual servicing & that was for an error that was caused by the supplying dealer in the first place. The Rover 25 never had to go to the dealer ( I still own both) nor did my MG ZT-T190 ever visit a dealer for any issue other than to find out why the drivers seat electric stopped working unless you disconected & reconected the battery (seat ecu). My FL2 has allready visited the dealer twice & is booked in for the 3rd time for all the same issues as the first two & this is from a company that has loads of money in the pot! I think they need a kick up the arse too to be honest especially as they are alleged to be a Premium manufacturer. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red. Car companies don't seem to realize they are destroying their own market. Of course if one does it, the others have no choise to follow as the reduction in labour cost is so significant.
