Power steering pump and reservoir replaced under warranty and whining noise has now gone.

Lovely again now Mr. Green

Spoke too soon....18,000 miles and power steering pump number two failed. Howling like a wolf again, but this time the steering rack has also developed a lot of free play, so has also been replaced.

I am now on pump number three and rack number two Big Cry

Had an RRS HSE on loan and must say not as nice a ride as Freel2. Strangely seemed to manage more mpg though Shocked

This mean the steering fluid level is low or the pump is dying... Big Cry

The fluid level has always remained the same so its only a matter of time now before total pump failure Big Cry . Landrover know this so why leave things so long so that so much damage is done. I cannot see their logic in these matters

at 10,000 km, replaced steering pump
at 34,000 km replaced steering rack Not sure if they replaced the reservoir. Feels better now. Can't be sure for how long

The frustration is going back and forth trying to explain to the mechanics what the problem is when they stare at you thinking that you are weird to even suggest that the power steering is getting stiff.

Took our car into main dealers for heavy steering. New rack needed but car is just over three and a half year old so out of warranty (only 30k mls) Quoted £900!! When I said it was a known problem and should not fail at low mileage they said to let them have service record and they would speak to land rover. (Bit worrying as they carried out the first two!!) Started arguing as the third service was carried out at an independent, but then phoned back and said land rover were paying 66% of the bill.
Although disappointed it failed, quite please that land rover acknowledged the problem exists. 2009 Grey HSE Auto

2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Baltic Blue

Had heavy steering at 55,000 kms... dealer replaced my pump under warranty, then at 59,000 kms, replaced the pump and the rack. One week later the same thing, except this time, my freelander 2 was out of warranty... 4 weeks of fighting with the dealer and they would not cover it this time, so my question is:

Is there any way of fixing this myself by just replacing the steering pump, or is it too much of a mess?

If I can´t fix this, I might have to sell my fl2 Sad 2008 Freelander 2 Td4 HSE Buckingham Blue

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Just had mine in to Dealer with a whine which was diagnosed as a problem with the power steering. Initially quoted £900 to replace various parts, reservoir and filter, steering rack etc. Dealer submitted a 'goodwill claim' to Land Rover as vehicle is 3 years 4 months old and done 35000 miles. Land Rover came back with offer of 33% to which I responded that other owners were getting 66%. Dealer said "I can do better than that, I hope" and came back with Land Rover will cover 100% of the costs.
Might just have something to do with the fact I've got a new Freelander being built at the moment but I'm not complaining and very happy with the Dealer Laughing

New to this forum, moved over from the Disco3. Big Cry

We have just bought a HSL auto with 16,000miles on the clock. It's mainly my wifes car, and she has been complaining about an annoying whine, more so when I was driving and she was sat in the front seat. So we took it back to the dealer. They diagnosed a steering issue and replaced the steering fluid and reservoir. This was no better so it went back and they replaced the steering rack.

It was again no better - so we took one of the mechanics out in the car and eventually he recognised that it is in fact the auto box that is making the nose. I can also hear it even when the cat is stationary. We took a similar model out after this and this was much quieter.

Is anyone else having this problem?

08 and 40.600 miles,
On the way to work, no warning, no noise, no steering play, no fluid loss, steering as light as a feather right up to the point where the pump siezed. Boy does the belt make a noise when the pump siezes - steering was definately designed with power in mind.

Made it to work OK, LR assist had a look, confimed pump wasn't turning (and that there was fluid in the reservoir!), organised a low loader, and a FL2 hire car to be dropped off. Totally painless so far, apart from not being able to find the black rental car in the supermarket car park Embarassed

Good job there is 3 months warranty left. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

08 SE Three weeks out of warrenty with 33k miles.
OK on Monday 21/02/11
Not used Tuesday 22/02/11
Wednesday 23/02/11 started up and loud whine sounding like the turbo but not because losing power asistance on turns.
Main dealer in Liverpool diagnosed failed steering rack and will also need a new reservoir and fluids. Quoted £941.66 inc VAT to fix but would not put in a claim to LR untill car delivered to their workshop for work to br carried out and cannot book it in untill Wednesday 09/03/11 and will need it for 2 days.

Car duly delivered to dealer for repairs to be carried our and for them to submit a claim.
Returned on Thusday and was informed that LR will contribute 33% towards costs.
Said I was not happy and was informed that LR only considered the claim because the car has a full LR service record and low milage and by the way LR will only ever allow one good will claim to which I replied "do not worry about that this car will be gone within three months and be replaced by a SKoda Yeti".
Reason ,at least the MD of the Skoda Dealership is a family friend and if there are any problems (which judging by my daughter's last four cars there will not be) at least I can go go right to the top.
