REAR Spoiler, whats it for?

I have a new 2010 XSe and its the first time Ive driven a flat backed vehicle and found in wet and damp weather the rear window gets really filthy in a matter of seconds, especially down here on the country lanes so you virtually need the rear wiper and washer on continuously.
I wondered if the rear roof spoiler was designed to be fitted to deflect airflow down over or alter it to keep the window cleaner in wet weather?
Im sure it must be fitted for some reason other than looks, its not a sports car so I cant see it holding the back down when power sliding around roundabouts, it adds weight which manufacturers are trying to reduce on to save fuel and I would have thought it wouldnt be fitted if it wasnt necessary.
Perhaps someone here has driven a Freelander 2 with and without a spoiler in wet weather that could tell me, if it definitely helps I will get one and fit it. Thumbs Up I was only wrong once and thats when I thought I was but wasnt.

I have driven FL2's with and without the spoiler fitted. I could not detect any difference between the two. In wet weather you need the rear wiper on almost all the time. IMO the spoiler improves the look of the car but I would not have bought one if it had not already been part of the HSE package.

Aesthetics. Although it may reduce fuel consumption ever so slightly at speed.

But looks is the answer to your question Thumbs Up Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

someone said its for the kids to hang onto, although a quick swipe of the rear wiper usually knocks them off At work

The spoiler serves no purpose at all, other than making some owners think they need one and spend a lot of cash to get one fitted Laughing
Buying a new FL2 with a spoiler as standard has probably cost you a lot of mpg Whistle
In adition, the FL2 spoiler does not enhance the apperance at all, in fact rather the opposite - thanks LR Whistle 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Fashion accessory, at the expense of some economy.

it's sole purpose is to "enhance" the appearance and is not needed.

a bit like the HST kit....................for looks only.

Wouldn't its intention normally be to create down-force, which is a function of drag, which in turn 'consumes' power?
Although looking at its dimensions and location, it's more likely to increase lift very slightly??

Yes traditionally they're to increase downforce, which would have the result you mention.

However, as there is no lip, it creates no downforce. What it actually does is move some of the disturbed air which occurs behind the car at speed (essentially a vacuum) further back. So the vacuum isn't as strong, therefore the car isn't being 'sucked' back as much.

Look at the new national express buses, they won't put them on for fancy or for downforce. Thumbs Up Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35
