I've had both, did 60,000 plus in the manual averaged about 37 to 40 mpg and have done 10,000 in the auto averaging 33 to 37 mpg, the auto has an annoying wastegate type sound when changing up which is apparently a "feature of the 2010 model car" but apart from that IMHO is a much nicer car to drive.

If you cruise on the motorway and mpg is factor go manual, if your a short tripper with start stop it's a fine line between manual and auto, Eco against eaze of driving

if you off road or tow then auto

I have done both cars, 400 mile To a tank in a manual and get 300 in the auto with the short trip driving I do

would I go back to an manual then the answer is NO not in a FL2

that's my opinion, it's all down to your use of the car and what you need Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Manual or Auto....it's only a Land Rover.

But the auto box in our Audi is superb and
I get 18-20 mpg from that. Rolling with laughter

I have always been a manual fan believing an auto would not be entertaining enough and a less involved driving experiance, but I have just been on the Land Rover Experiance freebie and was very impressed with the auto box, if you want sedate, use Drive mode, for a bit of poke use Sport Mode, and to be fully involved use Command Shift (manual without a clutch, brilliant), the instructor at Skipton was a Disco 4 owner with an auto box, he uses command shift most of the time as he reckons he gets better MPG by selective use of when the car changes gear.
Of course it could be an age thing and I may find myself hankering after a Volvo Estate auto Sad What if there were no hypothetical situations?

This is why they make both options - horses for courses. My main preference for manual is my old-fashioned perception of really controlling the car. And I like it when the tacho rises with the speedo!

Exactly what swmbo said when we had an Auto courtesy car recently but given the choice next time I would prefer the auto. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I feel that mpg is not really the main criteria in making the choice between auto and manual in the FL2 when everything else is taken into consideration.

it is down to the driving experience and what does it for you personally.

some people need to be involved in the actual "driving" of the car and others are quite happy just to go from A to B as relaxed as possible.

to me driving is all about using the steering/gearbox/clutch/brake/accelerator to get the best out of the car, whether it be it terms of performance, economy, comfort, or a mixture of both.
( I also have a 24 year old Golf gti which I have had since new and driver involvement always puts a smile on my face and still after all this time never ceases to amaze me !! )

after driving for near on 40 years I still enjoy this driving experience and will stick to a manual until I fall into the above A to B category, so it really is a personal choice.

I was worried after an Audi Multitronic to use another "normal" auto. However the FL2 auto gearbox is very refined, and gives a lot of ease to occasional offroad trips I do time to time.

I would not go back to manual, unless a slick red thing with 400+ ponies and a black horse on it. 2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone

Your car is depreciating at £500/month?

Just done a quick calc. the last Freelander lost £375 per month, £9k in two years.
The previous Skoda lost £347 per month, £12k in 3 years.

The good news is because I bought this one 12 months old for £21k, landrover lost £14k in 12 months £1166/month. With the current surge in prices it's probably only lost £1k in the last 12 months Very Happy

Looks like I spend nearly as much on depreciation as fuel. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

I certainly have spent more on fuel. I got my FL2 as a used real bargain. It's worth nearly the same 18 months later.

Germany 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e HSE Manual Alaska White

I have just sold my auto and did 25K in 2 1/2 yrs. Very nice and smooth and excellant for towing (can change gear in tiptronic and cruise control won't disengage). Mpg 20 - 21 mpg towing 1950kg caravan, 26 - 28 mpg on commute and 34 - 36 mpg on a long m'way run.

My new manual stop strat (2 wks old 1000miles) is much quicker. We have just towed this weekend and got 23 mpg, and nearly got 40 mpg on mixed A and B road driving. On the m'way I am getting 37 mpg.

Lovely though the auto was, the mpg is much better and the gearbox is really smooth and the change really quick. Given the choice I would go with manual (+10% mpg and much less RFL). Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Freelander 2.2e HSE , Privacy, Fully debadged, 19" Chrome SHadow alloys

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

Bought my first auto FL2 two years ago, so pleased I replaced it with same 2010 model in March. The fuel consumption is much better on 2010 car, the official specification for all 2010 models is different from previous models. This includes autos without stop/start.
A 500 mile round trip little m/way some dual carriage ,2 way country roads and about 50 miles on forrest roads in GGS or M&R as required returned 35.7mpg. Fairly heavy load in boot and driven mostly at legal limits.

Same run last year with 08 car just managed 30mpg All FL2's (3) Gone
