Don't know what I'm talking about!

Took my car to the dealers today for a fix under warrantee. No probs.

It has developed a leak. At the back of the car. I've had a look underneath and it's a sort of "square thing" - 4 bolts (all with drips on) and the "box" has (sort of) criss/cross markings on it. It's quite close to a big "lump" covered in silver foil.

That is the layman's description!!!

They said that they would fix it next week. it involves ordering a number of seals etc.

I'm not worried but.... what is this bit? What does it do?

That'll be a leak from your rear diff bud.

The bit you can see with 4 bolts is called the rear diff carrier/cradle.
