Thinking of buying

Hi all,

I'm popping over from the RRS side. Thinking of down sizing for my retirement.

What do I need to know Question

Or Should I stay where I am Question

There's lots of good info here so spend a couple of hours browsing. Best advice is to take a test drive and see what you think. There will be some folks who have done the downsizing too who can provide advice. Phil

I agree with Phil take a test drive, definately try and drive the auto and manual back to back.

If you have had the older RRS diesel there shouldn't be much of a change 0-60 according to LRO magazine figures, if your used to petrol the fuel economy should be marginally better Surprised Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

a few have gone FL2 to RRS

Boolia went RRS to FL2 to ML320 and now looking FL2 again, so might be able to advise on the real world difference between the two.

The FL2 does feel a smaller car, when back to back with a RRS, but then it is, but still quiet roomy inside, if you garage it overnight the FL2 is a whole 1cm wider too Cool

My concern would be the difference in boot size too, do you fill the RRS's, and could you adapt to the size of the FL2's Question Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

As Npinks will know I've got a 07 TDV8 with all the toys. Warranty expiring soon which I can extend for another 3 years.

But of course no after market warranty will cover wear and tear..........so the dreaded anti roll bar rattling/bush problem will not be covered by warranty.
So if done at LR it will cost circa £300 every few months or at least once a year to keep it quiet. I expect it can be done cheaper somewhere independant.

But thats its only problem after 3 years and 45K. So can't grumble too much and it is a really comfortable enjoyable drive Thumbs Up and still immaculate.

My annual mileage is about to plumett to about 6K or less so tyres should last longer and the rattle may stay away longer Bow down Bow down Bow down

I've only got to accommodate me, the wife and 2 small dogs in a cage. Cage nicely fills my boot right now so that won't fit in an FL2......but I can drop the back seat........so not really an issue.

But is the FL2 any more reliable or cheaper to run Question

What about tyre wear.....is it the same as the RRS ie the shoulders go bald as a coots A Censored within a few months Question

Presumeably tyres are cheaper Question

Also it will solve the Dab problem that is coming

How much is the VEL Question

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Sumatra Black

Hi Josh... I had a RRS TDV6 HSE and went to a FL2 SE and I have to admit that I preferred the FL2. For me it was a better drive, more responsive, more or less as luxurious and much cheaper to run!! I had a manual FL2. Tyres lasted longer too! If you have any questions Ill fo my best to answer!

Thanks Boolia.

Disappointing to see that the FL2 is no more reliable than any other model in LRs line up. Big Cry

I'm not in a major hurry got till autumn or at latest spring 2011 to decide. So will wait for the face lift LR2 and maybe the LRX will be out by then or soon after. I really like the FL2 and I've driven a few now whilst my RRS has been in the garage Big Cry

In the meantime whilst I would like a capable 4x4 I will also have a good look at the Audi Q5. As it has some pretty impressive figures for VEL, ecconomy and insurance. Performance is well up there as well.....3.0 diesel 0-60 6.5 secs Exclamation Even the 2.0 diesel 9.5 secs.
Bigger boot than the FL2. Any one got any thoughts Question

Isn't the Q5 loads more expensive than the FL2? is the Audi Quadras a 4x4?

Q5 Quattro is full time 4x4....60/40 split I think. But got no where near the off road clearance of the FL2 which means its an on road 4x4. Unlike the soft roader VW Tiguan which is mainly 2 wheel drive and just looks the part.

Yes Q5 more expensive than FL2 as it's a typical German car with pretty much every thing as an option. But I'm looking for longevity and the best 4x4 compromise for my retirement in The Dales/Cumbria.

Tonka.......what this about tyre wear on the Q5 please Question

Anyone compared the two Question

Scotland 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Zermatt Silver

Hi Josh
I had an extended test drive with an Audi Q5 earlier this year when I was debating between this and an F2. To be honest the Audi had a number of positives but I felt the ride too jiggly particularly on rough roads and, that generally it was not as good a ride or drive as the F2. I also found the S line to be be more thirsty than the F2 and the service was quite expensive in comparison. What clinched it for me though was at the time we had a lot of snow around here and the Q5 was no match for the F2

Hope this helps Thumbs Up

That in itself is a reason to consider the FL2. Mine has now done nearly 33k miles on its original Michelin Latitudes (except for one that got damaged when only a few weeks old Crying or Very sad) I think I will be looking at a new set at about 36-37k miles.

The Audi will be infinitely more reliable IMHO. It will outhandle the freelander on the road - the Quattro is actually very good..... but not for offroad.

The ride, in common with most Audi's, will be horrible.
