For people that are concerned about mpg should buy a citroen C1. These people that think a 2ton 4wd will give them 50mpg must live on another planet. It really gets on my nerves that some people on her buy these cars and do nothing but slag them off.

sorry, rant over

If that's directed at me then.....

I've not slagged my car off, I have a car that does a hell of a lot less mpg than others, never have I said I want 50mpg but I would like to acheive over 22mpg average I have now, after all I am driving on roads not up a mountain off road

rant over too Wink Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Land Rover obviously live on another planet then, and that must be where they conducted the MPG test which returned a combined figure of 42.2. It is not unreasonable to expect the vehicle to do somewhere near the quoted figure and some of the people on this site are getting MPG numbers of over a third less than the stated number. An analogy, If you order a pint in a pub, you expect to get a pint..... not 2/3rds beer and 1/3rd froth.

I haven't owned a car yet that meets the combined fuel economy figure.

Just out of interest:

How is the fuel consumption test conducted?
The test is outlined in Directive 93/116/EC as amended by 1999/100/EC and provides results that are more than representative of actual average on-road fuel consumption than previous tests. There are two parts: an urban and an extra-urban cycle. The cars tested have to be run-in and must have been driven for at least 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometres) before testing.
Urban Cycle
The urban test cycle is carried out in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20oC to 30oC on a rolling road from a cold start, i.e. the engine has not run for several hours. The cycle consists of a series of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerating and idling. Maximum speed is 31mph (50km/h), average speed 12mph (19km/h) and the distance covered is 2.5 miles (4km).
Extra-Urban Cycle
This cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75mph (120km/h), average speed is 39mph (63 km/h) and the distance covered is 4.3miles (7km).
Combined Fuel Consumption Figure
The combined figure presented is for the urban and extra-urban cycle together. It is therefore an average of the two parts of the test, weighted by the distances covered in each part.

Also:

My vehicle does not produce the same fuel consumption figures as shown in the 'New Car Fuel Consumption and Emission Figures' publication and/or the Internet site?
Because of the need to maintain strict comparability of results achieved by the standard tests they cannot be fully representative of real-life driving conditions. Firstly, it is not practicable to test each individual new car; thus only one production car is tested as being representative of the model and may therefore produce a better or worse result than another similar vehicle. Secondly, there are infinite variations in driving styles and in road, car and weather conditions, all of which can have a bearing on the results achieved. For these reasons the consumption achieved on the road will not necessarily accord with the official test results.

Sooo, if you want to know what the fuel economy is in a car before you buy it, hire one and drive it for a week, cos the official figures are basically meaningless!!! Hi Darling, I'll be home in 10 mins. If I'm not back, please read this message again...

I don't expect to get the official figures either, but i don't think i should be getting 26-27mpg driving on a motorway at 75mph either.

if its due to the way I drive, towing a caravan or something fair enough, I claim my fuel back anyway so Im not bothered about that aspect either,

If its looked at and no fault found on the 20th then so be it, doesn't mean there isn't a problem, just the computer say "NO" Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

That's Disco 3 fuel consumption, you should be getting low 30s with motorway driving in a auto npinks.
I got a manual, get 38-41 mph with motorway driving so I cant see an auto being twice the fuel consumption of a manual, and around town stop /starting and very hilly it go's down to 31-33 mph.

Nick, after the dealer tweaked the gearbox on ours the up/down changes are different and more in keeping with the way that it 'should' be. We've gone from just under 20 mpg to 25/26 ish and I can tell you nothing has changed in the style of driving.
I should also say that following the dealer visit I also started the Yamaha Fan mod'n.

I know nothing about this. (This has been proven again and again, look at any of my posts, I spout on for hours) BUT, the old Range rover Auto's used to have a "lock" in the gears so that once you were over a certain speed the transmission locked so that the sludge pump was no longer working and there is no loss of power through the gearbox and so efficiency improves.

Does the FL2 gearbox do the same thing, cos maybe yours is not. Hi Darling, I'll be home in 10 mins. If I'm not back, please read this message again...

I get low/mid 30's in the D3 motorway driving, mid/high 20's around town. ______________________

If I'd have known the D3 was as good(?) economy as the FL2, I'd have bought one of those instead!

Disco aside - does anyone know if the engine in the new 'e' version the same as the non 'e' or have they tweaked the engine management system? Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?
