Fitting side steps

Hi Guys, I've read all the posts on fitting steps and there seems to be a theme of having problems getting off the existing trims.

I'm about to set about my brand new paint work getting these trims off...... before I do and risk any damage, is there any easy way that minimises the risk or any tips.

I have luckily managed to borrow from the paintwork shop at work the correct size rivnut tool ....... result Thumbs Up

Thanks again

Hi Mark,I know what you mean ,new car and you dont want to damage anything, but when doing anything yourself your going to take more care then that of a garage. And you will know what you have done.

the simple way is to wash it all down first, and then dont be afraid of pulling the plastic covers off.the longer you think your going to break something the worse it will seem.

So starting at the back with the doors open pull away from you the rear of the cover, quite a bit of force is first needed. Then place your hand between the cover and the body and pull the cover once again off from the clips, work your way down to the front of the car doing the same.Be carefull as you get to the remaing two / one clip left as the cover will tend to drop,so support this as you pop off the remaining clips.Job done.

hopefully the clips will pop cleanly off, they do hold on very well.

The hardest thing to completing this task is realigning the clips on reinstalling a bit of time and its job done.

hope this helps.............

Thats great JA, thanks for that, very well explained. Looking at the weather forecast though I may have to spend the Easter break doing something less interesting Big Cry

Will I need any special tools to get the trims off? 2010 FL2 XS Auto in Santorini Black with HSE alloys

No Mark,

just your hands / fingers. And take your time !!

move the hand along whilst pulling the cover out when there is a resistance this is where a clip will be so a gentle pull of the cover and the clip has disengaged.

the brackets etc require the use of a 13mm spanner.

the Rivets supplied are extremely difficult to collapse ,even using the proper tool and require the strength of a heavy weight. You can always get some aluminium ones from your local Land Rover parts.Much easier and are what they use.

Well I had a go at it and as folks have said the clips are the fiddliest................. I'm stumped because the holes that accept the black brackets aren't lining up with where the bracket and step fit but the silver colur bracket that screws into the rivtool holes do line up with the step................

Any ideas guys I'm stumped Shocked 2010 FL2 XS Auto in Santorini Black with HSE alloys

Check the brackets that the actual steps slide into are in the right order (if i recall, they are different sizes?)

I also found it easier if i did not tighten everything up until the steps are in place, then given everything a final tweak..
