Auto headlights sensor ?

Good evening all. Does anybody know where the auto headlight sensor is ? Main reason I ask is I find the auto function doesnt put the headlights on early enough in dusk conditions so I end up turning them on manually as its not safe to drive about without them.
My local man who does my service tells me they work ok, which they do, but just not early enough.
Anyway my cunning plan is to cut a square out of my wifes tights and put it over the lense so it basically thinks its darker than it actually is. Thumbs Up 2008 Td4 Freelander2 GS - santorini black.

I would say they should be the ones on the windshield, on top and middle. 2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone

Think that's the rain sensor Wintermute, there's a sensor bottom right of the screen (When sat in the car) but you have to look at it outside the car.
On-board I could say mine is the opposite in that the slightest dull day and the lights come on - maybe the sensor is faulty but it looks like a pig to change,

Wintermute is right. The same sensor used for rain, also contains a light sensor used to control operation of the automatic headlamps.
What you saw on the bottom right is a marker used for adjusting the wippers. On the bottom center of the screen and on the bottom left you will see another markers.

I knew it haha Rolling with laughter

It would be quite hard to stick something on the sensor, as alex said, it's as well the rain sensor and the wipers wipe it as well.

I would guess that it's a software work to set it right, but I doubt that they would have such a setting available for the dealer. Maybe you can somehow compare when it kicks in to another FL and ask for the replacement of the sensor (or the thing that controls it) from the dealer? 2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone

Thanks alex and wintermute. Seems you may have helped me solve the rain sensor issue as well as I have to have that on the highest sensitive setting now to get it to work !

What an excellent forum, cheers guys. Thumbs Up 2008 Td4 Freelander2 GS - santorini black.

every car Ive owned with rain sensors seems to have to be on the highest settings Confused seems the designers think we are happy with about 20,000 rain drops on the screen between each wipe.

Saying that my farm pick up has no sensor and I miss one, especially as the wiper stalk works backwards... up for off Evil or Very Mad At work

My gripe about light sensors is that, whilst they turn lights on promptly when entering a tunnel, they do not turn off for ages after leaving the tunnel. The same happens when a dark cloud comes over. I guess parameters set by software are the key.

On Board and Chicken George

Also, guys, beware that the rain sensor system is also dependant on the car speed.
The quicker you drive, the more wipes you get. When you come to a stop, even if you set the wippers on the first continuous stage, the wipes became intermitent.
So setting it to the highest setting, when stationary, you may turn it into a continuous wipe when driving.

Also the system must be set to take into consideration the wear of the blades during time.
When the blades age, they tend to leave behind many smears and those, for the rain sensor, are falsely translated into a lot of water on the screen (a wiper smear could be associated with thousands of microscopic drops of water). So, intentionally, the system is set with a less sensitivity from factory.

maybe so but it would be nice if it had a more sensitive adjustment, I run mine on max all the time and sometimes wish to turn it up a little Thumbs Up At work

Then "turn it up" by switching the wiper selector to next (up) position. Laughing Laughing Laughing
