LOAD WHIRRING SOUND FROM ENGINE BAY

Driving home today from town and from no where came a loud whirring sound in step with the engine revs.
Never heard this before and sounds really bad.
At tick over theres nothing, just sounds as normal but soon as you excelerate and the revs increase theres this horible whirring sound, its the same if you rev the engine at a stand still, sounds like its coming from the drivers side in the engine bay.
Has any one else had this and what was the out come. Question

This sounds exactly the same as my problem and the dealer replaced the power steering resivoir. Took an hour and they said it was not the first by a long way. Not had the symtoms again since. 2009 FL2 GS

It was wet outside?
Did you had a lot of electrical loads at that time? Or before you start the engine did you used some power from the battery without the engine to be turned on? In other words, could be the battery a little depleted when you started the car?
That sound could be the sound of the accessories belt slipping on the generator's pulley.
When the generator has a lot of loads - depleted battery, screen defrosters, lights on, max HVAC, etc - it could oppose a great rotational resistance and in this way the accessories belt could slip a little on its pulley, thus generating that sound.
If this happen again, turn off any/all electrical loads and see if the whirring stops. If it stops then this is the case. Of course, if battery is depleted, this could last a little longer until it stops, but this is the general idea.

I had the same with the steering reservoir being at fault. The LR asist guy showed me how to tell if its that.

Take the top off the fluid reservoir and get someone to rev the engine. If it goes whirring round with bubbles and stuff its prob the reservoir. Something about the filter mesh built into the bottom getting clogged up. Because the mesh is built into the reservoir the whole unit must be changed. Hour job. Thumbs Up

Thanks Guys for your prompt replies. When this first happened i did not have any electrics running apart from the music, all other loads were off,no aircon no heated seats nothing that would drain the battery that i can think of.
Will try that thing with the stering resivour cap off and see waht happens.Do yo think i should call out land rover asist to check it out as i dont know what to do for the best regards superspark

Same thing happened to me when I called em.

I got mine to make the noise by sitting stationary, pushing the engine revs up a bit then turning the wheel on the spot backwards and forwards.

Yeah they sorted the reservoir noise. I then had a steering rack replaced but thats another unhappy story.

The LRA guy knew of the fault (reservoir) because it had happened to him with someone elses motor in this neck of the woods.

Apparently LR dealers know of the problem as it has become the point of a tech bulletin but I think it's one of those "if the customer asks and it's faulty replace it under warranty. So ask them to check with LR as quite a few on here have had it done.

As for the tech bulletin link sorry don't know.

I have to say that since I've had the rack replaced it has been fine (touching wood furiously) and I am really enjoying driving it.

Good luck!

Doesn't cost anything to go on the GTR website, all you have to do is register to gain access to it, only costs if you wish to download any material.

Freelander 2 warranty issues

Just had my freelander 2 back from the garage. They have under warranty replaced the rusted lockng wheel nuts, the B pillar pannels, both sides due to seat belt wear.
As for the whirring sound from engine bay " which is that loud now it gives me a head ache " ive been told its the belt tensioner so they have had to ordr in the parts,so another vistit to the dealers for that to be done oh joy.
Not impressed in the work done though,on refitting the door seals there were half in gaps were they now dont meet. ive since corrected it, must of been a YTS BOY.
Oh well lets see what happens next. As for the clutch slipping they are still waiting to hear from landrover on that. Yes you guessed it the clutch slipped on the way home from the dealers.
