Crankshaft Oil Seal!

After a very thorough 3rd service, a 'weeping' crankshaft oil seal was diagnosed.
This is a gearbox out job but all covered under warranty.

Iam taking the bold step to replace the whole clutch. In fact I have sourced one from a dealer that im going to give to my local dealer who are doing the job.

Seems silly not to replace it seeing as the car has now clocked 40k miles...........a new clutch fitted for under £175 when the dealer price of a new clutch with labour is close to 1k.

Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise as we intend to keep the car for another couple of years as it is quite simply a fantastic car to both own and drive (especially in this weather). Very wise move, given the problems some of us have had with slipping clutches after only 20K miles. What alerted your dealer to a weeping crank oil seal in the first place? Have you had any of the characteristic slipping by 300rpm at 2000rpm when eccelerating in 5th / 6th? 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

Interesting - an oil seal failing at 30k and inside warranty. I've done 38k miles, the warranty expired in August and my seal's just failed (the crank / gearbox interface oil seal). However, it's £500 invoice to fix it. Ouch.

I put a call into customer services to see what their take is - after all, this is hardly likely to have failed suddenly this morning, is it? 33% is all they'd give me - along with a very tightly controlled message about "if it's out of warranty, we're not obliged to give you anything". How very generous of them.
The garage tell me this is not something that they see failing that frequently and I'm not surprised: oil seals don't usually need replacing that early in a car's life. Personally, I'm very happy with the dealers' attitude but very disapointed by the level of assistance I got from LR's customer services.

Out of interest, does anyone know if the extended warranty covers things like oil seals or do they consider them to be 'normal wear and tear'? SE on an 07 plate
