MPG again

My Freelander has been off the road for the last 8 months and when I put it back on the road I had it serviced straight away.
I noticed that the fuel consumption on the computer would not go above 34 mpg despite it prevuiously going up to 38 on a long journey. I was away in Derbyshire from Scotland on Monday and on the way down the best I could acheive was 33.5 on the way back despite doing similar speeds the mpg went up to 37.5.

Anybody know why this should be the case I was on cruise control the whole way doing about 60mph.

Welcome, Cruise control is not very good for fuel consumption.

I find I can get an extra 5 MPG if I use my trusty foot. Thumbs Up Don't put petrol in a diesel. They don't run well.

A change of engine oil will always reduce the MPG on a diesel engine until it has "worn" in a little Thumbs Up ______________________

yes I agree, I also can get more mpg using my right foot instead of the cruise control.

Yes would agree but get more MPG on way home "uphill". Whistle

Always use cruise control to do the comparisons. The car is an Auto would that make a difference?

Interesting note about the oil change I did wonder if the cause was the service.

There was a thread on here recently regarding some members felt that the mpg fell as they approached a service interval.

Could it be due to the new oil vissc, viscossa, viscosittitty, visccossatt....oil thickness.... and therefore the engine having to work harder Question

the oil being new and thick theory is a non starter. When new oil is at operating temperature there is no difference and no effect on mpg.................ie the engine does not need to work harder.

in fact the engine should in theory be better lubricated with new oil so the mpg should in theory increase !!

Thats definitely happening with mine - 15 days to go and I'm getting about 25mpg Big Cry

Will mention it at service to see if it can be resolved - usually get around 28-32 even with short runs (Air con on ECON) There's always a way forward!

Trust me, new oil will affect the MPG which will go down initially after service. Exclamation ______________________

Hi all

Just collected my new XS yesterday. The journey home took about 2 hours (mostly motorway) and I returned 43.2 MPG. Mind you I was driving with extreme care!!! Don't we all with our new motors!! Laughing Laughing
