They killed the root. (not certain if they removed it all, or just froze it or something)

Best thing, no chance of it growing back, was done about 6 years ago, the top of my toe looks almost like the bottom now, just a small rough section.

Definately ask them about this, the bits where it kept growing back, never grew properly, and the nail never attached properly, and kept getting pulled off again (the closest smiley to throwing up)
