Hi,

I am currently considering buying a manual Freelander 2 GS and would welcome comments on the following:

I will be doing quite a few miles round town - how good will mpg be on manual FL
How good is FL2 at crusing on motorway 70 ish, what sort of mpg could i expect ?
How long do tyres typically last ?
Whats the performance like ? I had a test drive and it felt ok !
I have a little boy so FL2 would be ideal for family, I am just unsure on motorway miles and economy.

Performance also concerns me as I currently drive a Honda Civic Type R.

I guess the fl2 fuel economy will match the hondas, on longer trips anyway, diesels have poor fuel eco on short trips as it takes ages for the engine to warm up.
Your driving style will have vary a lot after driving the high reving honda , diesels dont like high revs.

it will of course be slower but the fl2 is a relaxing drive speed becomes less of an issue, I previously had a speedy audi and I didnt miss it.....having our son in the back makes me slower anyway. At work

Plus they are very, very safe, being made from a much higher gauge, high quality steel which is something that is oftern overlooked - this was a big selling point for us as we bought it to cart my Prego wife around and our soon to be born baby.

I also do a lot of short town driving in my GS i went for the auto a little less mpg but a lot smoother progress than manual.

very good on motorways stable and nippy enough for overtaking, my other car is a 4.4 v8 x5 and don't feel i'm being short changed power wise with the fl2, just different drives like going from civic r to fl2.

From the type 'R' as CG suggests your driving style will alter big time as the car is all torque and minimal revs - but to be clear for nearly 2 ton of motor the performance is very reasonable. With a combined figure of 38mpg and based on many of the reports here, around town for a warm manual you will get low 30's and on a good run low 40's. They eat motorway miles and are a very relaxed cruiser, with the raised up rear seating the visibility is good for the smaller ones in the back and I can tell you this made a big difference with my son who doesn't normally travel well.
Tyre wear - I'll have to throw that one out to the others but I've done 16k and there's at least another 10k left in them.

Just about all on here have bought one (or just about to like you) so we are biased, but I can assure you it was the best choice.

I have a FL2 GS manual, I get anything from 35 to 38 mpg around town and
upto 40mpg on the motoway.

I have two small children and two dogs, so safety was very important to us.

I drive 15 miles a day too and from the office & for shooting on a weekend,
it is without dout the best in it's class.

I am just about to get my FL2 GS manual delivered in the next few days and I seemed to have similar questions when I was thinking of changing.
I have a Civic Type S at the moment and even though the performance from the 1.8 Vtec cannot be compared to the 2.0 Type R, it still needs to be revved to get the best out of the car.
Considering over 2 years of owning the Type S, I have averaged 37, if I get anything similar +/- 2 with the manual FL2, I think I would be satisfied.

I was very surprised by the performance during the test drive. I know it will be a completely different driving style from the Type S / R but I think the performance it delivers is impressive and something I bet I will enjoy.

Considering I do not own the FL2 yet, I can't comment on the other questions

MPG Depends on your driving style,
I employ a rather brisk driving style and see a return of 25/26 mpg,
Which I'm happy with as I've had mostly large engined petrol burners before the FL2. if ya want a frugal motor a 4x4 even a diesel isn't the one to choose.

With the Auto diesel I get 29 mpg. I am expecting to get better economy as the car is fairly new (2000 km's on the clock).

The car can handle somewhat sport-ish driving as well. People drive with me are suprised with the sportines of the car.  2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone

I only get 22/23mpg round town in the type R so 29mpg would be ace. I get between 30/35 on a run so that would also improve.

As for Wednesday the good times will return !
