I have just bought a freelander 2 'black' special edition. It is based
on the 'S' model which does not have Terrain Response. Does anybody
know how it handles off road without it? I'm not looking at anything
hard core - more day to day use in heavy snow, country roads et...

I have a MY2010 HSE with TR, and TBH during the snow of the last couple of weeks, I have not had the need to switch it over to the Snow setting. My driveway isn't on a really steep incline, but 2wd cars I've had in the past have had issues going up the drive, in the FL2, no problems.

Having been trained in offroad driving, rather than had the odd day out with LR, the TR is like an idiot proof switch to 4 wheel driving.

Handy for Miss Daisy going to the shops, but of no real benefit, other than the switches look nice and the display gives you some comfort.

The programmes are pre feds, not that good. I mean look at the snow setting, it covers a multitude of other conditions too and before other people start, my FL2 and my Discovery has TR.

That said, I had a HSE for 3 months and I can't tell the difference in sound on the radio, the sun roof is surplus to requirements, the leather seats show wear after 10k miles and who the Hell need puddle lamps etc. All FL2 have the same engine, same chasis, your paying for un needed extras. I mean heated seats, very nice if you have piles and a heated steering wheel, don't be such a nancy, just put gloves on. Oh, I could go on....

Lada, they should be parked up against the wall and shot! They are an abomination against humanity, the scourge of society, better to walk than ride in a Lada - no offence intended to anyone that drives one, naw, I don't mean that, but it sounds very PC if I apologise. La.da is a medical condition, not a car make.

My point, so graphically put, is that in honesty, we don't need all these airy fairy extras in reality. It doesn't make the FL2 any better to drive. The car is what it is, no matter if it's a S model or a HSE model.

PS Dont tell anyone the Disco has factory Xenon lights, SatNav etc. I couldn't resist them against the dark of the black bodywork, but I don't need them ......... and besides, if I get one headlight smashed by a stone, god, there is 500 squid down the swanney.

ive had a s for 17 months,its well capable without terrain response, but i found a difference with t r on my new gs e my10,in the snow,and on wet muddy fields. wheel spin is non existant with ter responce i find. if you seen where i went in my old s fl2 you would be shocked im sure it is enough for what you want,and s,gs,hse ect will still beat 90% of other 4x4s in a off road test.

Well said, but do as I did and forgot to turn off the snow setting at a clear roundabout and you wonder where all the power has gone. Add a car?, probably a Lada bearing down on me and panic sets in.

It will do it fine. I have made medium hard off road with a FL1 04 much time and was very good to be 4x4 without low range transfer gear. FL1 used an older version of the HALDEX than our new ones on the FL2 and was OK.
I am driving also a VOLVO XC70 09 with the seam HALDEX 3 than FL2, of Corse no TR and is very good on snow and moody roads . Yuri

I'm driving off-road and greenlaning and because of my "Alzheimer's light" , I often forget to use TR. When my track was a foot deep in snow I set off at it in normal mode. I was making progress but getting lots of wheel spin and weaving, gradually losing momentum, so I switched to snow TR mode and could feel the extra drive from the rear. Momentum picked up etc. The snow was so deep that there was a danger of beaching it on a drift, which is a shovel job (as happened last year). So, I think TR clearly helps by reconfiguring the transmission, but other than that, I didn't have to switch to it very often in the recent snow and ice.

Switch it to sand mode and drift all 4 wheels  You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.
