Slipping Clutch after 25000 careful miles??

My 2 year old Freelander 2 with 25000 miles on clock has suffered from a slipping clutch for several months. Both dealers and Land Rover are unsympathetic saying it's a wear and tear item.Vehicle has never towed or been off road and has been carefully driven mainly on motorway use, indeed the original brake pads are still like new.
I would be interested to hear of anyones similar experiences and if they were able to get a replacement under warranty.
There appear to be a few other postings of a similar nature so there obviously is a bit of an issue with clutches on the earlier vehicles.I have been told that the dealer will remove the clutch and if they find it's simply worn rather than defective,I will be liable for the cost. The clutch is obviously worn but my argument is it's worn prematurely. However there is no sign of any compromise or negotiation on their part and I'm not too sure where to go from here.
All replies greatly appreciated.Rich. 2007 GS Manual

Clutch slipping is a well documented fault on here with early cars and all have been replaced under warranty

The biting point of the clutch has always been quite high from new but I was assured by the dealer at the first service that it was not unusually so.

I had mine replaced at 24000 miles to it slipping. But it only slipped between 1800 and 2200rpm every time and did nt get any worse.

But it was replaced without a problem. Are you sure the dealer is not fobbing you off about Land Rover not wanting to know? Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

I've spoken to Land Rover customer service myself who insist there's nothing they can do as they have no records of widespread problems of this sort. This is why I'm trying to get a few examples together, perhaps with specific dealers who have been helpful,so that I can approach them again. My two nearest dealers have been pretty unhelpful but would willingly travel a bit further afield to one who might be a bit more sympathetic and not just keep quoting the 'normal wear and tear' line. 2007 GS Manual

Mine now doing it for a second time. Now at 44k miles. Original one was replaced under warranty at 23K. Will leave it until 45K service next month sometime, to reduce hastle. I assume it will be warrantied. When they replaced my 1st one, the service manager said there wasn't any excessive wear visible. 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

Hi all,

I have just bought a Freelander 2, 2007 model and mine is doing the same as described by themainmuncle.

My vehicle has reached 38000 miles. The clutch pedal also feels a little bit high compared to the other Freelander 2's we have driven when our Freelander 1 was in for service.

I spoke to Team Valley Land Rover Service (who are an Independent approved service centre) and they have said they have replaced a couple, one was under warranty and one was due to driver error..

Getting bloody worried now as only had the car a week! Gone S383 ABA Freelander 2.0 XEDI Rioja Red

Just had mine replaced 2007 40000 miles, LR refused to honour the warranty and charged me £750 because it was fair wear and tear. Evil or Very Mad

So I'm not the only one to have been shafted by Land Rover.
Was beginning to worry after reading a number of posts of people having clutches replaced under warranty with no questions asked when I got nowhere despite trying everything I could think of.
That scenario of yours Nig is the one I was warned of by a helpful workshop foreman.
Traded vehicle in yesterday for another make.Accepted a derisory buy in on my vehicle but was still preferable to handing any more of my hard earned cash to Land Rover.
Good luck with em Nig.
Give em hell. 2007 GS Manual

It is very strange the mixed reactions here. On mine, I went for nearly a year with it slippeing from 1800rpm to 2200rpm in 3rd 4th and 5th. My nearest Land Rover Dealer said wear and tear.

I stated that if it was wear and tear it would gradually get worse but it didn't. I had the same issue from 10400 miles to when it was replaced around 24000 miles.

I changed dealers which was a pain due to it being a 55 miles round trip instead of an 8 miles round trip to my local one, but they drove the car and said quite catagorically that it was not wear and tear. Everything was replaced and it's been fine ever since. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
