Hi Newbie here

Thinking of buying a 4X4 for past 12 months now
Really like the looks and reviews of the FL2
Will have around £20K in all to spend
Any advice on whether I should go for a newer low spec FL2 or an older high spec model?
Any thoughts would be most welcome.

Hi Andy. My missus would love you, as I assume the MCFC stands for the Blue team around these parts. Though not if you are in a Beemer
I'd go for a minimum of a GS.

What kind of year & mileage are you hoping for?

I have seen plenty of HSE's for £20K and 2-3 yr old and 20-30K on clock.
I am wondering if I would be wiser though buying a new or nearly new e.g.GS which would still have warranty on it.
I do like the look of the HSE spec though.

Would reliability start to be an issue on a 3yr old HSE?

Would there be a noticeable difference in fuel consumption between an auto and manual diesel FL2?
I realise neither would compare to the beemer (irrelevant though if I end up having to replace a blown turbo - thanks for that geoffk).

2009 59 plate 'S' TD4_e in Lago grey manual, 5 miles = £20,400 Stratstone or was it Marshall's...sorry.
2008 HSE Silver Auto 20k miles = £20.400

If you can't make your mind up HSE or GS why not have a look at the SE.

Personally i like the higher spec one and for £20k you could get a desent 2nd hand XS, SE, HSE etc

If your buying new and taking advantage of all things that come with it then IIRC somebody got a new GS for a shade less than £20K Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

In theory you do not hammer your local dealer. You enter into a relationship with them at a price where they do not lose money (they just don't make that much) and if they cultivate that relationship properly you stay with them, spend more money and you recommend them. Congratulations on hammering out your deal. I'm afraid to say that I keep on bargaining until they say no, then ask for some more. They make enough out of the car on servicing etc to make it worth their while and I always drop the repeat business option in.

Don't forget the dealers have a margin to make that differs depending on proximty to their targets / end dates or sale periods. With volume discounts it can be worthwhile not making packet on your new motor if it moves them into a new discount range because of the numbers of cars sold. My advise is haggle as if your life depended on it and get as much evidence of what other prices you can get as possible. They do their research so you do yours.

Apologies if this approach offends - too often I have bought something to find someone else paid less. Then I wised up.  There's always a way forward!
