Hi All,

I will be buying a new car soon and my wife and I would like a 4x4. We are not going to be serious off roading but live on a farm so we need something that will get us through the snow in winter. We are looking at things like the Honda CRV, VW Tiguan, Skoda Yeti and of course the Frelander 2. My preference would be the freelander but all I have heard is horror stories of faults a plenty and breakdowns. How reliable is the FL2 as my wife would kill me if we bought an unreliable car. Any advice would be good.

I'm a new owner myself, Today atually, so they come no newer than that.
Did a fair amount of reseach on this site and the net in general.
The freelander 2 seems to carry the reputation of the freelander 1 and the build quality and K series engine problems.

However I could find no real problems.
The main one highlighted on this site seems to be the steering rack, and that should be fixed under warranty.

The 2.2 diesel seems to be really reliable so hopefully Landrover have got there at together on this model.

on my second fl2,cant fault them,all landrovers feel at home on farms

buy with confidence, its the freelander one that gives all the problems.. rover components . The fl2 is basically a Ford At work

I think most freelander horror stories are born bybthe freelander 1

I'm on my second FL2, my first was a little problematic but to be honest it was more down to me been a little OTT and non of the niggles was serious

15K in 6 months, not missed a beat despite the occasional pay and play day, towing a caravan, and going down a quarry most days.
Rang my favorit dealer to book it in for a service, he thought I had fallen out with him - the FL1 rarely lasted between services without a warranty visit.
It's a very different vehicle from the FL1, which was ground breaking for Land Rover and designed on a comparative shoe string.

Anybody can be unlucky of course and even the Freelander2 is no 100% problem free exception, but if the truth was known there probably is no difference between the vehicles you mention. I have had my Freelander 2 just over two years and the only thing that needed sorting out was the DPF was full and needed a service station visit - that could also happen on any car with a DPF. Mine was fixed immediately in an hour or so.
I guess most of the real problems one associates the Freelander with come from the completely different Freelander1

PS - The FL2 is a perfect vehicle to use in snow  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Hi Andy C. I guess the Honda, Skoda and VW have a better reputation than Landrover. I have bought several car mags and the reviews that the Freelander gets are great but at the reliability bit, it always questions, maybe because of the first Freelander. My Dad has just bought a yeti an I must say that the the quality of it is great but as I said I would like a freelander. My problem is that I cant get my finances to buy new and have about 18k to play with so I will miss out on the three year warranty. I want the diesel engine for economy reasons. Does anyone know if the extra warranty is worth buying and how much. Also is iy worth getting the Freelander that has the dial that changes the grip you have. Most of my driving will be on road but I stay on a fram and have a single track mile rd to go down and have a week old baby girl. I have already been stuck. Is the S model good enough or sgould I go a step up for the wee dial that changes the grip. Thanks again to you all who have responded.

Remember buying a approved used will give you 1 years full warranty and you can always check what warranty work has been done with the dealer Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

There are loads about for sub 18K.
Just paid 14K for mine with 1 years JLR warranty left.

Plan to renew with tesco finest after that runs out.
