Calculation:
New tyre rolling circumference
792 (original O/D) x 3.05 = 2416mm
Tyre with 5mm remaining tread depth
782 (O/D worn tyre) x 3.05 = 2385mm
Difference of 31mm
This means that the new tyre will have 31mm further to travel for every revolution of the wheel.
A tyre of this size will rotate approximately 413 times per km, therefore for every km driven the new tyre will travel an extra 12830mm or approx 13 metres!

Here endeth the lesson for today Yawn Yawn Yawn

Which means in layman's English - ya more likely to get a speeding fine with worn tyres rather than new ones Whistle 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Hmmm I think you made a little mistake there:

How are the kms measured: if it is by tyre rotations it means that the lower the thread on the tyres the slower you actually go...

So based on you calculations for each km you think you drive, you actually drive 13 metres less. So with worn down tyres you must drive about 1% faster to get the same speed as with new tyres. Meaning you are more likely to get a speeding ticket with new tyres then worn out ones!

a speed camera will have the rule set by the chief constable so in one area it might be as you say +10% + 2mph but outside a school it might be far less.

also the black rats (Traffic police) have discretion as to when to issue a ticket usually this involves "the attitude test" and the driving conditions/location. so don't be lulled into thinking you can cruise past a police car at 79mph (an immediate fail for the attitude test)

It it up to each Police force to decide what they set their speed camera activation at. You may well find that a camera in one village will be set at a different activation speed to a camera a few miles away in the next village or two different trunk roads in the same area could be set different. The cameras in my force area are placed at accident 'black spots' or the mobile camera vans can park up within 1km of an accident 'black spot'. But it is just a money making scheme! Very Happy Very Happy
